OK - I started Crunching for SETI in 2006 on, (even then), OLD AMD K6-2, 350MHz CPUs.

I used the "current", (for the time), Lunatics' App to Optimize performance.

On SSE, (the built in capabilities of the K6-2 Processor), what was the fastest App Lunatics would use back then???

I built three of these systems in 1998 and they ran up through until 2007. I ran BOINC, (can't remember what Version now), with Lunatics, (can't remember that Version #, either), and I remember them taking up to 28 Hours on CPU Tasks in 2006.

I also had an AMD K6, 300MHz that died that year in 2006, and I replaced that unit with an Intel Pentium III and a different Motherboard. My "Newest" System back then was an Athlon, (original 1st Generation), 1GHz System on BOINC and Lunatics.

I SWEAR that I remember Lunatics making use of CUDA! But, I'm being told that I'm remembering wrong... So, what App was Lunatics using for SSE Capable CPUs back then?

Now that you are remembering the K6 maybe you should change your tagline to "Come along K6" and see how many people "get it" ;)

IIRC we were using an app based on MMX extensions (pre-SSE) way back then and is why those old CPU's can't be used today. ;-)

Cheers.

THAT SOUNDS FAMILIAR!!! :-D "MMX"!!! I remember Number Crunching helping various New Users and it seemed like everyone had MUCH newer hardware than I; for in 2006, SSE-2 was discussed - BUT, SSE CPUs, (like mine), were still being supported. Then, some time later, SSE-3 and the various SSSE-??? were the rage; right up until affordable GPUs that could crunch started being the rage.

In fact, even in 2006 GPU crunching was being discussed, BUT, was new then.

WOW, how times have changed!!! :-O

Thanks, Wiggo, for remembering MMX! :-)
