Message 1950006 - Posted: 16 Aug 2018, 1:10:19 UTC

so i loaded up boinc on another system

it has a celeron and 7 AMD gpus (2x 580s and 5x 570s)

whats the best app to use here? i started off with installing boinc, then running the lunatics installer.

deselecting any CPU tasks, and selecting the second bullet for "ATI" GPUs (ATI is now AMD so...)

is that the best? or should i reconfigure it some other way? the WUs seem to go incredibly slow. slower than i think they are capable of.

Which Lunatics Installer??? 0.44 or 0.45 Beta 6?

The latest is 0.45 Beta 6 and has SOG Support. 0.44 has NO SOG Support - if I remember correctly, someone else with more knowledge may correct me if I'm wrong.

The beta is available at all three sites, so that should be the one he chose.

0.45 beta.

SoG wasn’t an option for AMD GPUs.

Am I missing something?

SoG was for both AMD and Nvidia cards.

It was a OpenCl application that was faster than Cuda 5.0 , cuda 42, and cuda 3.2, that we were running at the time. Since then, Petri has developed his special app8.0 and 9.0 that are much faster but still have some issues. Now much closer to a Beta application due to the wide distribution of it.

I don't think zi3v is "beta" The stated "Acceptable" Inconclusive rate at SETI Beta is less than 5%. On all my hosts total, the zi3v has less than 2.1% Inconclusive rate. Better than SoG in some cases.

If SoG is for both AMD and Nvidia, could you tell me how to unlock that option for AMD cards in the lunatics installer?

As far as I can tell, the best option is the one labeled “HD5” and is appended with “sah” in the app name displayed in BOINC.

Simply, the lunatics installer does not give me the SoG option for an AMD card, it’s only under the Nvidia options, which my card is not....

For now it’s running the HD5 SAH app. WU times on the order of 5-7mins.

I took a more reasonable approach, assigned 0.5CPU per GPU task, and reduced it down to 4 GPUs.

7 GPU tasks were producing such serious CPU bottlenecks that run times were like 20-25 mins per WU

We need Raister for the answer on this. I'm more familiar with Nvidia and SoG. He would know about the ATI cards

Same here. I usually work with nvidia cards for SETI.

I’m just trying to get some extra points for Wow lol

I just looked at the actual archive and it looks like the OpenCL_Ati_HD5_r3557 is the same generation as SOG app.

From looking at the archives, it seems the SOG app for AMD was slower that the HD5 app.

There's your answer. The HD5 app is from the same source code as the r3557 NV SoG app.

Got it. Looks like I made the right choice then.

Quite confusing when things don’t have consistent naming convention.

Yes, correct.
SoG is not in the installer for AMD GPU`s.

Or Mike, as he was the primary tester for those apps.

And he has now posted.

I may borrow this thread. I have had huge problems setting up my Pony machines...
One of my rigs is pretty similar than topic machine, but problem is different: computer does not start crunching seti, because it always says:
16.8.2018 14:02:50 | SETI@home | Task 14au18aa.24947.11932.11.38.133_0 postponed for 30 seconds:

I Installed new version of boinc: Noup
newer GPU drivers: Noup,
then i uninstalled BOINC and deleted all form Program Data/BOINC and Installed another newer drivers and tried some configs, but it just does not work?
I even installed lunatics and did not solve the problem...

Computer has 4x Rx470 Radeons and only G4400 dual core CPU, 8GB Ram, Win7. It runs Einstein@home and Amicable Numbers just fine with all GPUs working like a charm.
How Seti@home produces this "error"?

Usually its indication of lack of resources.

Try this.
Check for a file called mb_cmdline_win_x86_SSE2_OpenCL_ATi_HD5.txt in your projects folder and add this...

-sbs 1024 -period_iterations_num 30 -tt 400 -spike_fft_thresh 2048 -tune 1 64 1 4 -oclfft_tune_gr 256 -oclfft_tune_lr 16 -oclfft_tune_wg 256 -oclfft_tune_ls 512 -oclfft_tune_bn 64 -oclfft_tune_cw 64

Save as text.
On next WU start optimized app args beeing used.

No helping :(
I found 30min time to try different settings, but nothing worked. Ended up uninstalling lunatics and started fresh with those cmdline settings, but no hope :(
Messed up again with cc config and simulatin 4 cpu:s with ncpus - parameter did not help. Even tried to disable 2 GPUs, but big Noup.
Its only rig that does not want to crunch seti, even my 1core CPU dual GPU Pony machine crunches fine :)

Is there any other setting can help? It tries to start and cpu usage goes 100%, but after few seconds: postponed...
Still wondering why other projects works fine.

I think I will install fresh windows 10 on different HDD and try again tomorrow.

fresh install windows
install latest radeon drivers (18.8.1)
reboot
install boinc
do basic configuration of boinc, add your project and info
stop boinc manager and all tasks
run lunatics installer, make your selections, make sure to select the HD5 (second bubble) app for ATI cards (ATI=AMD, AMD bought ATI some years back)
do not select any NV GPU apps (unless you have them)
after lunatics finishes, reboot again for good measure, and load up BOINC. it'll take a few minutes for tasks to show up, give it 10-20 minutes before panicking.

once tasks come in and start processing, then stop it again and edit your cc_config and app_config files and command line options

if you are just using a dual core to run 4x 470's, use 0.5 CPU per 1 GPU. ideally you want 1 to 1, but if you dont have it what can you do? lol. my 4 cards run ok with 2 cores on the HD5 windows app runs about 5-8mins per WU.
