If I was to travel to where you live, what would be at the top of your list as a recommendation for a good place to eat? When I was a kid, there were a handful of really nice restaurants here for special occasions, and some other casual spots; now there are lots in every category, and the competition means many fail before establishing a good reputation. I can think of several local institutions which aren't around anymore for a variety of reasons such as not keeping up with changing demographics and tastes, or a family-run restaurant that faces obstacles from a newer generation that isn't as attentive to the business as their parents or grandparents. What's the old saying? ~The first generation starts the business, the 2nd coasts with it, and the 3rd closes it.

It boggles my mind how much money goes into opening a restaurant, not to mention keeping it up on a daily basis. What's your favorite local place to go, and why, and how long has it been in business?

Oh my, I am between San Francisco and Sacramento. Both are known for world class restaurants. I could spend several days listing the places that I have tried and been fotally at awe about. What kind of food do you want to know about. I just got home from Epic Steakhouse

When in San Francisco I always like to dine at Younge's Cafe there near the old Bank of America 72 story building--I think it is on California and Montgomery. just off of Market street It is greasy, hong-Kong style, man-in-the-street type of food. I always ordered the chow-fun noodles and spicy been curd to customize my lunch entree. They give you way too much food but there is nothing like it in town.

For old-world, formal dining I liked Vannesses--I don't know if it is still there--Order the seafood giant appetizer bowl.

For those with (very?) large appetites, my other primary hobby than SETI@Home is reviewing Toronto and area All-You-Can-Eat (AYCE) restaurants (ie sushi bars, buffets, grill houses, brunches, etc.) Most of them are quite good, and quite a few excellent... the old-school low-quality ones have disappeared over time as Toronto has "gentrified".

I'm particularly happy with the map at the top-right which shows their location, genre, links to their Google Maps entry and our rating and review if it exists.

Like Carlos, being from Los Angeles, we have dozens of World Class fine dining establishments. It tends to get short shift in some guides because the places are a bit casual compared to NYC, but that is LA. If you had to pin me down just to the 'burb of Pasadena, it would still be hard as there are many, but I'll mention, The Royce at The Langham, Arroyo Chop House, La Grande Orange Cafe, Houston's, Parkway Grill, Bistro 45 and Kabuki as some.

In Toronto I always ate at Movenpik. I liked the one on Younge street

In LA I like to go to Steers or Laury's for prime rib. I once went there with a colleage who drank about 10 scotch and waters. When the waiter brought the bill Sam stood up to his full 6 foot six height and bellowed "$1.25 for scotch on the waters". it was 1968. Sam was a double for the Marlborough Man. We ushered him out before we had a punch -up.

Another great place to eat in San Francisco is the Sportsman's Grill. which required a reservation about a month in advance. I was visiting there for a Sprint conference and convinced the local Sprint rep to book us in there. He had to send a big check to hold the reservation. Well the food was beyond compare. Even though you sat on what amounted to picnic tables and had greasy wine glasses, The pasta and Calamari were the best ever. When the waiter presented the $700 bill, he announced cash only. They would not even honor the check that held the reservation. so we all dug into our wallets and offered to go out back and settle the bill with fisticuffs.

I felt bad for recommending the place--but it was still the best food ever.

Nobody's mentioned The French Laundry - I think it's in some of your all's neck of the woods.

There's a place called Jack Fry's, just a few miles from my house that is my favorite fine-dining restaurant, and it is that because it has maintained not only good quality presentation of food over many years, but the experience is like walking into an old black and white movie, complete with piano player. I rarely go out to eat, but when I do, I want to be taken somewhere kind of magical and transformative - like a good movie. You know the feeling after coming out of a good movie, and you walk out of the theatre and things just look and feel different. That's the mark of an excellent fine dining experience for me, too, and it's harder and harder to find that.

But there are at least another 40 places within 10 miles. Restaurants in Clitheroe

Ah yes, the porcelain palace. ;~) There was one at the corner of where I transferred buses on the way to high school and college. I only went in there to warm up in the winter. ;~)
