BASRA, Iraq — Protesters in this port city stormed the Iranian Consulate late Friday, setting it on fire and sharply escalating violent demonstrations that began over miserable living conditions but have grown into an indictment of Iraq’s stagnant politics.

The consulate was the latest symbol of entrenched power to be torched by protesters in Basra during a week of demonstrations, raising concerns that the unrest would draw a firm response from Iran, which controls several powerful militias in the oil-export city.

The attack on the consulate also upended notions of solidarity between Iraq’s Shiite heartland and Iran, the preeminent Shiite power in the region. The assault contributed to a growing sense that Iraq is slipping into a period of dangerous instability as powerful political parties remain locked in a struggle over the composition of the country’s next government.

Protesters said they targeted the consulate to vent their frustrations over abuses by Iran-backed militias in Basra, as well what they see as Tehran’s outsize influence over their city and over Iraq’s fractured politics.

The demonstrators complained that the militias run rampant in Basra, kidnapping and extorting money from their opponents and creating an atmosphere of fear. They said Iran has empowered the militias to enrich themselves at the expense of the city’s residents.

“Iran has destabilized Basra with their armed gangs,” said Sattar Hamdi, 50, a day laborer. “They have the upper hand here and with the politicians in Baghdad. I’m appealing to any foreign country, even Israel, for help because we’ve already lost Iraq to Iran.”

The Judeo-Islamic tradition has deep historical roots that Zionism and Islamism have tried to erase.

Iran says it is Trump.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-45613866
Iranian leaders have accused US-backed Gulf states of being behind an attack on a military parade that killed 25 people, including a child.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said "puppets of the US" were trying to "create insecurity" in Iran.

Gunmen opened fire at Revolutionary Guard troops and officials in the south-western city of Ahvaz.

Earlier Foreign Minister Javad Zarif blamed "terrorists paid by a foreign regime", adding that "Iran holds regional terror sponsors and their US masters accountable".

Reports say nearly half of those killed were members of the Revolutionary Guard, who are under Mr Khamenei's command.

The National Interest: America Must Realize It Has No Say in Syria's Future
The reality on the ground is that there is no good reason for a continued U.S. military presence.
At long last, the conflict is winding down. Assad has won, and Washington has lost.

Understanding Russia is very simply to us other countries living around the Baltic Sea.
About 1000 years of experience of Russian geopolitics...
Russia wants sea ports and controll of trade. They want the Baltic Sea (always have), The Barents Sea, the Black Sea (almost done now) and now the Eastern Mediterranean and then controlling the Bosporus Straight in between .
Ops. Syria is a perfect country to meet Russia's needs.
And what's next? The countries and territories of the Eastern Mediterranean include Cyprus, Greece, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Israel, Turkey, Egypt and Jordan.

As all peoples, including Scandinavians have had, presently have, or will have 'ambitions'.
Scandinavians?
For all I know Saudi Arabia think we are a PITA because we don't agree on their political role in ME and also their Sharia laws.
Then of course Israel that also think we are a PITA because of their Palestine politics.
And Turkey for their Kurd politics.
That's about it.

Btw. Saudi Arabia plowed $27 million into lobbying in Washington last year. Buying supporters.

so much privilege ...
https://www.thisisinsider.com/saudi-prince-salman-reportedly-confused-khashoggi-outrage-report-2018-10
Saudi Arabia's crown prince, the man suspected of ordering the killing of Jamal Khashoggi, could not understand why the Saudi journalist's disappearance was such a big deal, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Mohammed bin Salman was shocked to see Khashoggi's disappearance in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul provoke such international outrage, and he called the White House adviser Jared Kushner to ask why, the paper said.

Citing unnamed people who recently interacted with the prince, The Journal said Crown Prince Mohammed became angry that the episode had turned into a diplomatic crisis.

"All I did was torture to death and hack to pieces a United States permanent resident just because he disagreed with me. Was that wrong? Should I not have done that?"

I had high hopes for the crown prince with his (probably Potemkin) reforms, but that has long since evaporated. :^(

Syria conflict: US 'planning immediate withdrawal of troops'
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-46623617
US troops have largely been stationed in the Kurdish region in northern Syria.
The partnership with Syrian Kurdish and Arab fighters (the Syrian Democratic Forces) is credited with virtually eliminating IS after it overran large swathes of Syria four years ago, imposing a brutal rule on almost eight million people across Iraq and Syria.
However, the militant group has not disappeared entirely. A recent US report said there were still as many as 14,000 IS militants in Syria and even more in neighbouring Iraq - and there is a fear they will shift to guerrilla tactics in an attempt to rebuild their network.
But the partnership between the US and the Kurds has enraged neighbouring Turkey, which views Kurdish YPG forces - the main fighting force in the SDF - as an extension of a banned Kurdish group fighting for autonomy in Turkey.
On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country might soon start a new military operation against the YPG in Syria.
Mr Erdogan added that he had discussed his plan with Mr Trump by telephone and that he had given a "positive response"

And Evgeny Popov, Russian "60 minutes" TV host says "Ух ты. Возможный вывод американских войск из Сирии уже называют победой России."
(Wow. The possible withdrawal of American troops from Syria is already called a victory for Russia.)
