Went up into the old crunching lair last week, and was inspired to try firing up one of the old rigs that I had put together way back when, just for giggles. First of all, I have to say that booting up an XP machine is sort of like putting on an old, comfortable shirt or pair of jeans, it just feels right even if it isn't the most stylish thing in the wardrobe. Too bad it isn't possible to run the latest hardware with it, hence my desire to try something kind of crazy.

First of all, I would like to keep the same computer ID that I had when I originally built it. I got the BOINC event log copied off of the old drive (after installing the new card, which it was definitely Not happy with) which I removed and installed a different HD, and clean installed a fresh copy of Win 7 Ultimate. It was interesting, I had pulled the drivers from the Elitegroup website - the board is a 945GCD-M - but being as the board is obviously somewhat older, when I tried installing those drivers, Windows said the ones it had installed off of the Win 7 SP1 DVD image on the USB drive I installed it from were more current. Interesting.

Anyways, after I got Windows installed, I installed the 7.2.34 64 bit version of BOINC ( Ruh Roh, I just noticed that the old drive had 7.2.33 installed, will this be an issue?), rebooted it, and it came up to the Pick your Project page. At that point I closed BOINC, and then copied over all the BOINC files from the Program Files and Program Data folders that I had taken from the XP system, and overwrote everything (after finally realizing that there were a couple BOINC processes that were running in the background even after closing down BOINC, which I needed to kill to allow everything to copy properly), then restarted BOINC.

I'll post both event logs, and sorry that they are so long, I just wanted to make sure everything was there in case it was important. I'm trying to see if you guys think that I have accomplished my goal of moving it over wholesale from the XP box to the Win 7 box, while keeping the ID the same on the new install. Is it even possible to tell from the event log if this has happened, or will I have to look elsewhere? I still haven't connected it up to the web, so the server doesn't know yet about this new Win 7 install on this hardware.

Looks like you did want you wanted to accomplish Al. See the old Atom processor on your list of computers with 0.05 credits and recent contact from today.

Updating BOINC versions doesn't cause any issues with Host ID's. Mainly you have to worry about driver support for the graphics card which looks like the new configuration sees the 1080Ti.

Juan posted a good link on how to revert to an old Host ID when upgrading hardware or software.

How_to_revert_to_an_older_HostID_number

He also posted a few comments and corrections in the How to get back the old host ID? forum thread in NC.

Main thing is to always increment the rpc_seq_no count to plus 1 from the old host's client_state.xml file.

Well,I guess BOINC considers changes within the Windows family of OS' similar enough to not warrant a Host ID change. You moved from Windows XP to Windows 7 Ultimate without issue it seems.

Now I have to wonder how that 4 core Atom processor will handle feeding working to that 1080Ti?

True, though again, I haven't connected with the server since this morning, as you saw I did hit it once with the XP box about 5 hours ago, but since then the network cable has been unplugged. Plus, I still need to install the latest beta app as well, but didn't want to go thru with that till I was sure that I'd accomplished what I had hoped for. Which it appears that I have? Is there an easy way to see the ID at this point on the new box, or is it going to be confirmed only after it pings the server?

I'll have to look at that thread, and the client_state file, to make sure I do that modification to it before I connect to the server, as I don't want to bork it now...

Now I have to wonder how that 4 core Atom processor will handle feeding working to that 1080Ti?
And that my friend is going to be the fun and interesting part! Of course, all it is going to be tasked to do is feed that monster GPU, wonder if it being on an PCI-E 16x v1.0 will cause any heartburn? I know they're up to v3 now, but at least it's a 16x.

Interesting. That should say 7.8.3, why is it only going for 7.6.22?

HostID is down in the <projects> section in the very top part of client_state. Unfortunately, when the host next contacts the project and IF YOU DONT increment the <rpc_seqno> by one more than what the client_state shows from the connect this morning on XP, BOINC will issue you an new HostID.

I hope I have that all correct. I would check with Juan as he is the expert in this area.

Well, I did a search on rpc_ in the client_state.xml that is currently on it, and came up with these 4 lines:

<rpc_seqno>64199</rpc_seqno>
<nrpc_failures>5</nrpc_failures>
<min_rpc_time>1519598007.668018</min_rpc_time>
<min_rpc_time>1519598007.668018</min_rpc_time>
<sched_rpc_pending>0</sched_rpc_pending>

So from the sounds of it, I'd need to change that 1st lines number to 64200 and I'd be good to go?

From what I understand, that is correct. Hope Juan confirms that. Kissagogo27 said he didn't get a new HostID when he updated Windows OS' So you should theoretically be the same when you connect again. Just update the rpc_seqno number. You can check the client_state once you've connected to the project with the Windows Ultimate in place and the project has updated the client_state. You should check online on your Computers list to see if you still have the 6689894 Host ID.

Message 1921148 - Posted: 25 Feb 2018, 22:50:39 UTC - in response to Message 1921147.

I believe I am ok at this point, because I checked in the client_state file, and the host ID is the same as on the server, which it has been since it was created, and on the server, the rpc_seqno is now showing 64199, and in the client state it is 64200, one number above, so it seems good to go.

Before I connected, I saw that I had one task that was like 560 some days late(!), that errored out when it tried to run giving some CUDA initialization error, so I aborted it, suspended everything that I could find, then hooked up the network cord and did the update. That one task disappeared, then I did what I mentioned above. So, now I suppose I should install the Lunatics beta client on it, and go from there?

I believe it's right too. Just fire the host and lets see.
Forget about the old task, it will eventually clear.

As I had that CUDA error on the old task, you think I should update the Lunatics app first, or just let it do it's thing? Also, should I update BOINC? I have7.2.39 also downloaded, or should I just take the jump all the way up to the current rev? And then do the Lunatics update?

If was me i simply forget about that task. Focus on what you need keep the Host ID.
I always install all when i run a new host, you never know what was left broken from earlier installations.
What version of Boinc you runs did not affect the Host ID. So use whatever you like and feels more comfortable.
To make things easier i suggest to put the host in NNT before you start to make the change.

Oh no, that task is gone, my concern was that it had that CUDA initialization error, but that might be because it was an almost 2 year old task. So, I guess I will upgrade it all the way to current, and then install the latest Lunatics on top to see how well it can run. GPU only, of course! lol

Wonder what kind of optimizations I might want to try with this setup? :-O

See this thread: https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=82629#1921136

You could use Mark optimizations as a starting point since you use similar GPU.
I believe your Atom CPU 330 could keep feeded the GPU if you leave the cores free to do the job.
As always YMMV and some test is needed.

Regarding BOINC versions, it really is just up to personal preferences on how the menus are laid out. As long as you are using BOINC >> 7.2.0 I believe you have access to using an app_config which makes it easier for tuning.

With regard to the SoG app tuning, I would attempt to use the suggested SoG app docs tuning for the 1080Ti. If you get system lags because of not enough cpu resource, then adjust period_iterations downward accordingly or use the evil -use_sleep parameter.

After checking your CPU load while just running the GPU you maybe able to run 1 or maybe 2 CPU tasks just for the giggle factor Al. ;-)

Cheers.

Disclaimers:

(1) I apologize in advance if this post is off-topic, but I had a hard time idenfying the right topic for it.
(2) I intend the issues and questions I pose here as sincere, and respectful at all times of the BOINC staff and forum members.
(3) I intend to review each response seriously. I'm not looking to waste anybody's time.

As a long-time supporter of SETI I have mixed feelings--pride and gratitude. IMO, SETI (and more generally BOINC) were the true "breakthrough" ideas. Nothing short of genius. These days the phrase "disruptive technology" is being applied to so many things it's meaning feels diluted. This makes it hard to remember that, all things being equal, some DTs are vastly "more equal" than others (e.g. BOINC).

That said, the appeal for monetary donations in addition to processing so many work units is a hard pill for me to swallow. But it got me thinking. Has anybody attempted to put a dollar estimate on the value of earned credits? I can see a big challenge here in part because of the non-stationary nature of value over time (rising inflation, decreasing cost of computing, etc.). Nonetheless, it ought to be possible to arrive at a simple dollar value for the totality of the work I've done historically for SETI and more recently, other BOINC projects.

Putting this another way, if a project like SETI had relied on a typical PaaS provider like AWS, what would it have cost SETI, in dollars and cents, to process the same number of work units which I provided for free? [At last report, as leader and sole contributor of FAA WJHTC, I had amassed roughly 95M credits over five years.]

After checking your CPU load while just running the GPU you maybe able to run 1 or maybe 2 CPU tasks just for the giggle factor Al. ;-)

Cheers.
Just pulled it up a little bit ago, and it seems to be bouncing between 30-40%, usually 30-35 seems typical, though one core seems to be between 60-90%, so I assume that the ~35% is an average of all cores? I need to put together an app_config file and get it using the whole core instead of the .04 it says it's using, and if it can handle it, I might for fun try running 2 tasks and see if it falls over or can grunt thru the load.

I don't know. Never seen any such calculation before. There are gridcoin pools that reward distributed computing by putting a crypto currency value on the hosts contributions. But that is different from what you ask. I think there are some calculations showing what the equivalent tera or peta flops that the total SETI hosts are equivalent too. Then find out how much does AWS charge for the equivalent hours worth of processing at that level of calculation.

Looks like you have some math homework to finish.
