Thought that this might be fun to watch over time.
A tracking site (not affiliated with Elon Musk) has been launched (no pun intended) to follow Starman and his roadster on their journey.

Seems misleading to me. Earth escape velocity is 25,020 mph....

You are right. Speed is relative. The 7,548 is the speed away at which it is moving from earth. The speed toward Mars is 43,075 mph. It's straight line speed is 70,579 mph. I would hate to get pulled over at that speed.
