It has been nearly 10 years since I worked (for money). Up until two years ago I had a disability insurance income that supplemented my social security income and kept my income roughly at the level of my after taxes income when I was working. Since that time I have been living off my social security income which is barely enough to get by on, on a monthly basis. My credit card debt has been gradually rising, using them only when needed to cover emergency expenses like replacing dead refrigerators, car batteries and etc. So, for about the last 6 months I have been seeking a suitable part time job to help out. I was recently informed by a friend's wife that the local public school system is in dire need of substitute teachers so I applied for a position. My application was approved and after a three day training program last week my name has been added to the school system's list of available substitutes. I got my first call today (Sunday) and will have my first assignment tomorrow at a nearby middle school. The teacher I am subbing for is a "resource consultant" which I have no idea of what her duties are or what will be expected of me. I guess I'll find out in about 8 hours.

Good luck, do they give you hazard pay for being a substitute? Some districts here in California do.

It really sucks that this has to happen to people in this day and age.

I hope you find whatever you do enjoyable.

Well, I survived my first day back at work. It's been a while since I had to get up at the crack of dawn and stay up til mid afternoon. They ended up switching my assignment this morning when I arrived at the school. Another teacher had just called in reporting that she had been in a car accident and for some reason they figured i would do better taking her classes. I'm not quite sure of their logic. This was my first day teaching after more than 40 years and these classes had no lesson plans ready for the substitute (me), plus it was six classes of 6th grade reading. But I managed to muddle through the day. I was very tempted to start writing referral slips to the deans office but I figured that wouldn't reflect very well on my ability to handle the classes. I think I may be more selective about the grade level and subject matter of future assignments that are offered my way.

I have to admit that a lot of why I felt the need to go back to work is due to my lack of retirement planning during the early years of my work career. That in addition to the beating my 401K plan took 11 years ago reducing by almost 50% the amount of money I had managed to stash away. To be honest I never figured I would still be alive at 68 years of age.

I think in the long run getting back into a more structured routine will be beneficial to my health. And Rob, I sincerely doubt that very many of these "Little Darling"s give a rat's @$$ about gaining any wisdom from my fount of knowledge of life.

You made it through the day basically unscathed - I call that a success :-)

Did you have a discussion with the kids about what they were assigned to read?

Gordon, I made an attempt to determine what they had been working on last Friday but for the most part I got about ten different answers. After I was given a handout temporary assignment for the remainder of the day by the 6th grade reading coordinator I pursued that course of action.

Good news, I just received a second assignment for Friday. This time at a local high school for a general science class. Yipee, I hope.

Complete success, to you, Bob!

As an aside, I taught HS Science, for the GED, when I was in the
Army (Germany). It was a very rewarding experience.

At least general science is a subject that I am very familiar with. Maybe I will prepare some information about SpaceX and the successful launch today.

And possibly information about the seti@home project. I hope the school system wouldn't object to that as it doesn't cost anything to join the project.
