Message 1916452 - Posted: 2 Feb 2018, 7:02:09 UTC

so after trying to diagnose the problem myself for about a week with no luck ive decided to ask for help.

the seti@home screen saver just wont turn on! my computer runs at 3 or 4% at idle and around 25-30% while gaming/live-streaming but recently the screen saver will flick on and then immediately flick off again. it wont even come up when i try to start a preview from the windows display settings. not really sure what happend but i haven't been able to crunch on this computer since and it ran fine until about January 18th when it stopped dead

any advice would help
thanks

Perhaps Microsoft finally went ahead with what they threatened about and disabled the screen saver for everything but the lock screen? If that's the case, there's no going back.

One other option is that during the update your videocard drivers were updated with ones given out by Windows, and that these miss OpenCL, required for the screen saver.

this is what happened when my computer tried to run the screen saver, it looked like it was going to run the screen saver and then it blinked on and off and stopped calculating, very frustrating. and if its a windows thing wouldn't we be seeing hundreds of people reporting the exact same problem at about the exact same time?

Not everyone runs the screen saver anymore.
One other option it could be is that you are now only running tasks on the GPU. Tasks on the GPU don't have the graphics application, so they cannot show the Seti screen saver but will show the default BOINC screen saver instead. If that one doesn't show either, then it's definitely something in Windows.

Your drivers look fine to me.
By the way, work can run fine without the screen saver. The screen saver isn't necessary to do work, it's just eye-candy. And with monitors these days being LCD, LED, OLED etc. a screen saver isn't necessary anymore as these hardly burn in (if at all, but certainly not permanently), and that's what the screen saver was invented for to prevent: burning in of static images.

Message 1922300 - Posted: 3 Mar 2018, 3:56:55 UTC - in response to Message 1917034.

Had the same problem here for about 10 days. Boinc & Seti were running fine for the last year on current machine.

Hardware config has been stable - no changes.

Only software change was a Geforce driver update and several windows updates, both on the day Boinc stopped.

Tried removing/ reinstalling updates & Boinc / Seti, as well as troubleshooting power management - no joy. Updated drivers - also no joy.

Screen saver, power management no longer activate at all.

I'd suspect this is a Windows 7 problem, but Boinc also no longer loads at start-up, although it is checked in msconfig startup settings.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks, erik

Forgot to mention - even when i load BOINC manually, it never begins processing work. CPU usage stays at zero when the compute is otherwise idle.

Very odd...

That says nothing, that's the BOINC Manager loading from the registry, whether it auto-starts or not. It's set for me too, but I don't allow BOINC to start with my system. Better check that in BOINC Manager -> Options -> Other options, see if "Run Manager at login?" is checked.

Can you run BOINC Manager?
If you can, can you please post your start-up log (from the Event Log, in BOINC Manager press CTRL+SHIFT+E, copy all)?
And simple question, but does your BOINC have work cached? If it doesn't it cannot run it either.
Do you have the project set to No New Tasks perhaps? The button will show Allow New Tasks as the buttons show the option you have, not the state they're in.
Activity menu isn't set to Suspend?
Project isn't suspended?
Individual tasks aren't suspended?

"Run Manager at login" is checked.
I can run BOINC Manager from the start menu. It does not run at login,
BOINC Manager is set to cache work 0.1 days minimum & store 0.5 days additional. I don't know how to determine if those caches are actually filled.
Project is not set to No New Tasks. The button shows No New Tasks.
All 3 options on the Activity menu are set to "based on preference". None are set to Suspend.
The project is not suspended. the status box is blank and the button shows "suspend"
Individual tasks show "suspended - computer in use".

Appreciate your assistance with this. I've run BOINC for many years, but never had any difficulty with it, so i know almost nothing about it.

Well, according to your task list you have 143 tasks in progress, and today returned one task of those.

You have set your preferences not to do calculations on CPU or GPU when the computer is busy.
If you haven't been active on that computer in the past days, something else on it may have made it look as if the system was busy. We know of certain USB connected paraphernalia (joystick, controller, speakers) that make it look as if the system is busy. Also certain mice are very sensitive, or have a hair in the infra-red or laser reader hole that makes it never go to sleep. Unplugging these, or turning them off, will usually help.

Lastly, if something else on the computer is using the computer heavily, this may invoke your suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 25% setting. Increasing this value, or setting it to zero (off) may be needed here.

Thanks for the assistance.

i believe there is something preventing the computer from being inactive.

I reset inactivity period to 1 min, and BOINC will now start processing about 50% of the time. The other 50% it remains suspended . This suggests something mechanical.

Currently the only USB devices I have plugged in are ancient trackball, keyboard & joystick.

Thanks for your help in narrowing it down.

Ancient tracker ball ..... Some years ago I had one that sat there jittering, not enough to be visible bur just enough to prentend to be moving, over 24 hours the pointer moved about a third down the screen.

I had a joystick so the same, if you went into the joystick setup, you could actually see the pointer "vibrating" slightly

I replaced the trackball and have power management and BOINC screensaver working again.

I may have an issue with joystick/throttle, so leaving them unplugged for now.

Still cannot get BOINC to start upon boot, but I'll work on that.

Back up & processing work units again.

Thanks for all your assistance.
