I have tried searching for anyone with a similar situation. I found one instance where that seemed to be the case, but the solution used does not work for me. So I will try to explain it as best I can.

I have two separate computers that are identical in specs (bought at the same time from the same vendor) but with two different names (similar to, but not exactly XXX08 and XXX12). They are on the same internal network with different local IP addresses. Computer XXX12 I have been using with BOINC and Seti@Home (in addition to Milkyway@Home, Einstein@Home and Cosmology@Home) for a rather long time. I just recently installed BOINC on computer XXX08 and connected to the projects as computer XXX12. My problem appears to be with Seti@Home only. All the other projects listed show each computer in the view computers list as separate machines with their own host ids. However, when I connected computer XXX08 to Seti@Home, it took over the host id of computer XXX12. Computer XXX08 then showed up in the computer list in my Seti@Home account and computer XXX12 disappeared. When I had computer XXX12 connect to Seti@Home, it replaced computer XXX08 in the computer list. I did some research and found that they were using the same host ID. Someone that had a similar issue indicated that deleting the host ID from the "client_state.xml" file solved their problem. So I shutdown BOINC, located the host ID in the file, set it to 0, saved the file and reloaded BOINC for computer XXX08. The event log indicated that the host had not yet received an ID. I updated the project and Seti@Home gave the computer the same host ID that computer XXX12 was using. Nothing I do seems to convince Seti@Home to give computer XXX08 a different host ID from that of computer XXX12.

If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears! For the time being, I have removed Seti@Home from computer XXX08 until I can figure out what the problem is, if ever.

Sincerely,

As far as I know, the problem can occur when you have two computers with the same hardware, and on one of the two machines you copy the data directory of the other machine, then let it contact the project. When the other machine later contacts the project, the server sees the exact same hardware with the same hostID number, just from a different IP address (which is possible when using DHCP routing).

Also as far as I know, the solution is what you described above, but needs to be done on BOTH systems.
One other option is to temporarily remove a hardware resource, such as the GPU, on one of the systems and have it contact the server like that. That may jolt it enough that it's seen as unique.

Ageless,

Thank you for the response. I am not what I did, but I was getting ready to head to bed and decided to check it one more time. For whatever reason, computer XXX08 is now registering in Seti@Home as a separate computer. I now see both computers XXX08 and XXX12 listed. However, it appears that a new problem has arisen. These same two computers are now sharing a BAM ID and are going through the exact same process/issue when I sync the hosts with BAM.

Any ideas on this one? This is so confusing!

May need time, wait 24 hours to see if the changes propagate.
