Message 1916700 - Posted: 3 Feb 2018, 17:37:33 UTC - in response to Message 1916683.

Just an idea... need to polish a lot to be implemented.

Maybe some of us who use common internet connections could help instead of one, imagine this, each "tape" holds about 50 GB of data, instead of one DL and retransmit all the data back (i imagine 10 - 20 tapes per day) this set could be divided in 10 -20 volunteers and each one do 1 tape at a day. Or even instead of 50 GB tapes use a "small" tape (with less GB on each)
Obviously this is not a permanent solution, and this 10-20 volunteers must be choiced very carefully in the seti community but that could help to pass this complicated days.
I will be happy to help but my internet connection is only 20 MB and not so stable, but if i could help i'm in.
I believe a lot of users will be happy to help.

An interesting idea. Just the reverse idea of splitting work in distributed computing. I have a 1 TB monthly activity limit on my ISP account. I rarely use more than 250GB any month, so I have spare capacity. But with only a 16/1 MB download/upload DSL connection, getting a data tape sent back to Berkeley will take some time.

But with only a 16/1 MB download/upload DSL connection, getting a data tape sent back to Berkeley will take some time.

But some has even faster connections (not my case 20/2MB) and not see any problem if takes 1 or 2 days to DL/UL one tape since in my idea there are 20 or more others who do the same thing at the same time. If i'm not wrong they use about 10 tapes of 50 GB per day or a little more.
Instead of the lab spend 100$ / TB, that could be another way to help founding the project.
Of course fix the connection problem is the best option. But apparently that is not happening, at least no news on that front in the last days.
Obviously the "retransmiters" must be cherry picked in the community to be sure of the integrity of the data.

Jeff has found an old stash of data that we haven't done yet. He has to do some header fix up (because really old data has incorrect values in the header), and then convert it from 16-bit complex format to 4-bit complex format.

With luck more data should be online tonight or tomorrow.

Good to hear. Old data is just as good with the new apps.

Yes, good to hear, thanks for the update. I was worried we would be out of data again this weekend before Monday.

Good to hear. Old data is just as good with the new apps.

And the data being that old would have to mean it's Arecibo, and that means more AP as well as MB. Time spent crunching AP reduces the demand for MB, extending it's time till it's all gone.

I checked to see how much space I have on my Google drive, it's just 100 Gigs. But for $10 a month, I could bump it up to 1 TB. I would gladly to that to help out, but I'm not sure if it would be enough. Are the files being moved same as the channels - 59 gigs or so? A 1 TB cloud drive could work if the files are micro managed while moving.

I just checked mine and I only have 15 in my account they must've cut back on sizing

If you have Microsoft Office 365 they provide 1 TB of storage. I use very little of it. What is it we would need to do to help out? I have a 50 MB down/10 MB up connection.

Sounds like a job for torrents.
Can the public access Seti at Berkeley and the GBT data through Internet2? If the problem is in between the 2, get a bunch of trusted people with reasonable data allowances and set up a Torrent for each file from GBT. The trusted users download the files from GBT, Seti then downloads those files from those users. Of course this only works if there are plenty of users, and GBT can support their connections, and that Seti's Internet2 connection to those users isn't affected by the data chokepoint.

Guess the luck ran out and the conversion process on the old data is taking longer than expected. All out of work on the Windows machines. Einstein and MilkyWay get to balance their debt.

Yes, Jeff ran into some snags with the data. Matt's unavailable to transfer more data from GBT until tomorrow.

Splitter seem to be down to me....

I dunno, seriously considering moving most of my hardware to F@H. I just get back into DC with new equipment.. ThreadRipper is idle yet again. I don't remember that SETI has been down for so long or had so many problems... Been doing S@H for over 15 years with various accounts and hardware.

Perhaps you guys have enough volunteers to do the WU's you need and my resources could be used elsewhere.

Thanks.

Why not do the weekly outage tomorrow? That will leave time to get the new data and do the maintenance. And when the project restart with this new data not need to stop the next day again.
