I'm just wait the day when "sanity descends" on the world of crypto currencies and they start to return below 1c/1$ There will be much grinding of teeth and a number of folks will find that the piles of silicon in their garages are worth less than piles of sand....

And they shall deserve it........................

I think it is going to take major upheaval to dampen the exuberance. We've seen countless times drops of 50% in valuation only for BTC to continue the upward climb and claw back everything that was lost. I think crypto is going to have to be outlawed my major governments or national banking organizations for the craze to end. Or some major cyber crime that steals all of the major exchanges assets to cause a drop in mining activity.

Speculating in the crypto currencies is not for the faint of heart, is it. From 20K/BTC before Christmas to today with BTC=13K is a 65% drop in valuation in less than a month. You basically have to become a day trader to participate.

. . Hi Keith, yep it is a big drop but it is more like 35%, still glad it isn't me :)

All gone, just checked on the GeForce 10 Series Family, all gone, top to bottom, other than the odd 1030 or 1050. Oh well.

. . 1050/1050ti do OK

I'm glad that I got all my 1060's back in Dec 2016/Jan 2017 when I did because the prices have been ridiculous to ludicrous ever since. :-)

Cheers

. . Yeah, I am glad I got my 1060s back then too, now I just have to bite the bullet and deal with this uncooperative Ryzen rig. Then the little beasties can come out to play ... Not that this is the best time for that with credit being soooo low :) But it's about the number of WUs for me (mostly).

It was over 50% drop for a while when it fell to 9K from 19.8K.

Hey Keith,

Wasn't it you telling me the DDR memory in the 1080Ti wasn't good for Mining???

Hey Keith,

Wasn't it you telling me the DDR memory in the 1080Ti wasn't good for Mining???

No I was telling you that the miners prefer DDR5 memory over DDR5X which the 1080 and 1080Ti have. Or better said, miners prefer cards that use DDR5 memory because they are cheaper and use less power than cards that use DDR5X memory. The hashrate per watt is better on cards with DDR5 memory.

Considering that petr33 gets a 230,000 RAC using 4 1080ti cards all of seti@home data could be crunched on less than 4000 GPUs.

1 1080Ti and 3 1080s...which is still pretty pretty impressive, lol...

What is impressive is the crunching power of the Linux CUDA90 builds (or 9.1 in the case of petr33 GPUÅ› )

Just a simple example.... with Nvidia stuff only of course.

petr33 1080Ti (OC ???) crunch each blc in about 64 secs, his 1080 (OC ???) in 84 secs, mine 1070 (OC No) in 130 secs

Compared with Zalster 1080Ti running SoG 410 secs, considering he runs maybe 3WU at a time??? each WU will crunch in 136 secs.

So a 1070 running Cuda 90 crunches about the same of a 1080Ti and obviously the 1080/1080Ti running CUDA90 crunches even a lot faster.

Maybe what is the best investment for the SETI community is to hire someone who could transport the Linux CUDA90 code to the windows environment. Sure a high gain in crunching power without the spend of a single cent in new hardware or electric power.

My 2 cents.

Even though my home made stand is working out fine for me, I have another board that I'd like to remote the video card on, so thought since mining has been booming again recently, I would take a look at what options I had for a reasonably priced, fairly simple stand. I guess before I started looking I should have thought about what happened in the CA gold rush, and how the people who made most of the money were the ones who supplied the miners, not the vast majority of the actual miners, who broke even, or worse.

Did a quick google, hit some links to fleabay and to Amazon, and was shocked to see what they are asking for a few cut pieces of extruded aluminum and some bolts. Mind boggling, They were all at near to Way over $100, which I guess goes along with the situation we're having in video cards right now. $25, 30, maybe, but $150-250? Umm, no. I'll keep looking to see if I can find any sanity out there, or else I'll just have to roll my own again. I'm sure v 2.0 will be much better, and won't have the special Dewalt enhancements on it this time either.. ;-)

Hmmm... I can get a 3 foot lengths of 1/2 inch alum stock at my local hardware store for about $3 & a 100 pack of pop-rivets is about $6. So I could probably put a nice little stand together for around $25.
Perhaps I should start doing that and selling them for $75 to undercut the other guys and make some cash to fund my future hardware...
