Message 1912469 - Posted: 12 Jan 2018, 5:01:13 UTC

Hello All, hello Admins,

Dissatisfaction increases. for the work done the ratings have been falling for weeks. The cause in one's own place is appropriate - but useless. The rating system of seti is scrap. This has been known for years - but nothing is done. I'm a bit silly, that I get upset about it. But it is a broken system, which leads us astray. That is bad and should be improved. Is that possible?

greetings Klaus

Listen to them scream. There was a tropical cyclone and it did damage. You want AP for BIG Credit, send people to fix Puerto Rico and maybe Arecibo will be able to send tapes to Berkeley to be split into AP work units.

Even that doesn't work as well as it did. Payouts for AP WUs were falling like a stone as well.

Modify the code to properly award credit consistently for the flops used to complete the task the same across all devices

That's what we had before Credit New.
The number of FLOPS were actually counted while the WU was processed. As long as the WU result and the number of FLOPS counted by each system were a close enough match, Credit was granted. The more work (FLOPS) you did, the more you got paid. The less you did, the less you got paid. It didn't matter how long it took, what OS you had, what hardware you used, what application you used. It didn't matter who your wingman was or what hardware or application or OS they used. You did X amount of work, you got x amount of Credits. You did Y amount of work, you got y amount of Credits. You did Z amount of work, you got z amount of Credits.
It was a very good system.

I agree, it was a very good system. Fat chance of it returning. Richard Haselgrove informed me that all previous versions of the credit algorithm code were expunged and not backed up anywhere. All that is available in the BOINC code tree is CreditNew.

From his post at GPUGrid.net:
@Richard Haselgrove

Be careful of your terms. 'CreditNew' has been the default BOINC mechanism since 2010. I suspect this is what GPUGrid is using for these tasks: the support mechanisms for 'even older credit' have been removed from the codebase.

David has expressed an interest in exploring credit mechanisms: I am the only person (so far) to have responded to Issue #2132 in over 3 months.

Sadly this laptop is only thing i have, think most have forgotten that this is crunching when computer is not doing anything..
If and when Seti@home starts to use (Parkes) I just hope they don't up the anti on crunching, not all are rich!!..

And some feedback or praise on our work would be nice, during the donation time not a single THANK YOU almost like it was expected unless you was a top notch!

I run Seti for the science, not for the Credit (yes, it would be nice to have our contributions acknowledged, but i'm doing the work because I like the concept of the project. Is there anyone else out there? Won't know if we don't look).

Shame of the lack of feedback..I watched lots of questions towards Seti@home,
only the well known was answered during the donation period many went not-answered, I know things have been tough around here lately, But come on what is the status with ALL..

Easy fix:
You credit hounds needs to buy more computers, and crunch more, to keep your RAC.
David wants that, that's why he created Credit New.

Seti cobblestones as the first Cryptocurrency?
Also for Cryptos in the beginning it is easy to get new coins and then it gets more and more resource demanding, since the system is usually closed and maximum number of issuable coins predetermined.

In short, it is a deflationary system, as they can be described in economy.
In such a system, you get more with less coins. This in part would explain why Cryptocurrency value increases with time, net of the huge speculation going on.
SETI in the same way gets more work done with less cobblestones, since cobblestones are increasing their value the same way e.g. Bitcoin does.

We also have in part some technicalities that remind the blockchain structure (not on the storage side, though, which is still centralised), since SETI cobblestones are issued by making more servers agree on their value (compute->report->compare results among clients->get credit)

Anyone more inside both sides of the field can confirm or deny deeper analogies? :-)

Is it pure coincidence that we are all seeing our RAC drop after probably installing a certain patch from Microsoft in the last 7 days that was headlined to slow PC's down by up to 30% ????

pure coïncidence , this patch is not installed on my crunching box ^^

it's due to the type of Wu crunched now and the lack of AP wu ;)

No patches installed here yet.
But the credit rate sure appears to be dropping.

Nothing related to M$, Linux boxes has the same decline (or even worst)

A simple explanation why that's happening:

1) About a little more than a week ago the project only has blc WU to crunch. (Few Arecibo/AP WU only resends AFAIK)
2)They crunch slower than the common Arecibo WU.
3) Due that your host crunch less WU per day.
4) Your RAC will follow that.
5) And CreditScrew just make that worst.

But don't worry you are still doing the same work for the project. So science is still happening.
Just the credit is less. I agree that is weird. Just try to explain why that is happening.

Well, I guess my question was sorta kinda answered. I'd say my biggest gripe about it all is not the _amount_ of credit I get, I mean, I'm sure they could just go into the code, and add 2 or 3 or 4 zeros behind whatever number is now given, so a workunit would be 5000 or 500,000 instead of 50 credits. Look at me! I have Seven Hundred Ninety Eight Trillion credits! Whoot! Big deal. Go buy your 6 toasters with it. No, to me is the total lunacy of the inconsistency of it all.

TBH, what I mostly care about my RAC is that it is an indication of how much actual work I am doing, how hard my system has been working, and _especially_ if something is going wrong. If my RAC is falling, and there is still work in the cache, everything else being equal, that would indicate to me that there is something going on with my computer, and I had best take a look at it to see why. I guess that would be my perfect world scenario, but from the comments above, it appears quite unlikely that it will be addressed any time the the foreseeable future.

I am not complaining about the credits per se.........
It's just that I would like the flippin' rate to remain constant so I would know what effects any changes I make to my computers are really having.
It's almost impossible to gauge that when the dang goalposts are always moving.
