Put them in now before you get too drunk, pressured, believing or insane and make a fool of yourselves.

New Year's Resolutions are there to let us know how weak we are.

I would like to give up smoking.. but I have smoked since I was a feotus .. I won't be giving up any time soon however many times I told myself I would.

Be shamelessly Anti-Resolutionary and free yourself :)

What resolution will you make that you know you probably won't keep?

Barf on New Years resolutions, I don't do them...

That's not always the problem. We live in a food toxic world. Food being available anytime you want it. Need it or not.

I recently fasted for at least 14 hours, just so I could have some blood tests done, for the most part I eat real food, almost nothing processed, almost no added sugar is in My diet. There isn't even a bag of sugar for the ants here.

Well, in 2017 I escaped my addiction to alcohol. Best thing I did in 40 years.
Tried ditching the cigs, but fell back.
So, for 2018, I am gonna give the smoke sticks the final heave-ho.

What resolution will you make that you know you probably won't keep?
I've made these words of wisdom part of the resolutions I haven't always been able to keep in the last decades. Worth a perpetual try imho because well, you know, “I still believe that peace and plenty and happiness can be worked out some way. I am a fool..”

In the spirit of the Holidays' Season, here are two Carl Sagan quotes. Cheers !

“In the way that scepticism is sometimes applied to issues of public concern, there is a tendency to belittle, to condescend, to ignore the fact that, deluded or not, supporters of superstition and pseudoscience are human beings with real feelings, who, like the sceptics, are trying to figure out how the world works and what our role in it might be. Their motives are in many cases consonant with science. If their culture has not given them all the tools they need to pursue this great quest, let us temper our criticism with kindness. None of us comes fully equipped.”

“The chief deficiency I see in the skeptical movement is its polarization: Us vs. Them — the sense that we have a monopoly on the truth; that those other people who believe in all these stupid doctrines are morons; that if you're sensible, you'll listen to us; and if not, to hell with you. This is nonconstructive. It does not get our message across. It condemns us to permanent minority status.”

Well done Mark.

Thank you, Rob.
Both are bad habits, but they had to be jettisoned in that order.
No way was smoking going to go away if I kept drinking.
I know I shall persevere this time, and very soon.

40 years alcohol. That's hard.

Smoking is an issue for our health but oft doesn't create issues or harm in our general mindset (as long as we feed it) even though nicotine is uber addictive.

(I do suspect however that drivers needing a fag or who just had a drag might not be compus mentus?)

40 years is half a life times worth of struggle.

I see the way the forum... the Agora gives you space..

You are worth it.

Don't overload yourself trying to give up everything...

Next you will be telling us you want to become a veggie like me.. ;).

Proud to know you Sir.

Thank you, cRunchy, for your kind thoughts.
Yes, 40 years was a long, hard time.
The fight to give it up was nothing compared to what I put myself through for all those years. Nobody else did it to me.
I did think about it from time to time. After I'd wrecked a car, or destroyed a relationship. Or after the myriad of bone numbingly stupid things I did for so long, time after time after time.
I can't really quite explain why I was unable to turn my back on it until I turned 60yo. I guess that's what addiction is.

But, here I am, finally able to look back at it from the other side. Many people in my shoes never get that chance. And I take a good deal of pride in the fact that I did it on my terms, by my choice, of my own free will. Not by any intervention, hospitalization, or incarceration. Again, there are many who never caught themselves in time and were in free fall until they either passed or had the decision taken from them.

So, I am not going to waste my time wailing and moaning about a wasted life and irretrievable time. Instead I shall spend more time being thankful for a life saved, a ship righted, a better path chosen.

Giving up one more thing isn't going to break me. For I am a stronger person now than I was just 8 months ago. And I know what my will is capable of if I only choose to exert it.

And no, cRunchy...........I do like vegetables, but I shall remain an omnivore, thank you very much. LOL.
