Current law requires a BATFE and FBI background check and purchase of a 'tax stamp' to legally possess a fully automatic firearm. It is also illegal to convert a semi to fully automatic firearm without a Federal license and strict records must be kept on such actions.

That's what escapes me about current law on bump stocks(which I fully agree should be banned), as they clearly convert a weapon to a form of fully automatic action using the index finger of the operator as an integral part of the action.

I do not however support any ban on Armalite Rifle design 15 (AR15)weapons as they are not fully automatic and are simply another evolution of the rifle.

We live in an age here in America and the World where any perceived issue real or imagined generates a demonstration which in turn(in many cases)becomes civil disobedience escalating to riots, destruction of property and fear of loss of life.

Recently the residents of Ferguson, Mo and Baltimore, Md might argue that an AR15 is a reasonable defensive measure when the torch carrying mob is coming down the street and your family is inside.

From the land of chicken cops who were ordered to turn tail and run by a Lt.* Sounds a lot like a school resource officer more recently.

*Heard his call on the radio when he made the order. I'm sure you can find it on YouTube it eventually played on TV. The entire riot is on him as far as I'm concerned, him and his Officer Safety is more important than anything else buddies at the Los Angeles Perjury Protection League. But what do you expect when the LAPPL sends "experts" to perjure and claim the criminal scum did nothing wrong. Oh they are criminal scum, the Federal court, unlike the state court didn't let the LAPPL suborn perjury so they stand convicted.

Eye, how about this for your AR-15, BATFE and FBI check and a Tax Stamp. Not outlawed. I'd like to add passing an MMPI as normal too.

Eye, we stopped the "evolution" of the shot gun by banning sawed off shot guns, what's the difference?

What changed?

The level of stupidity. ;-)

Cheers.
True. However, money talks, decency walks. No wonder Trump likes the NRA:
5,000,000 members at an average of 62.92 per annum = $315,000,000 per annum.
Annual cost averaged out between the 3 membership costs of 78.50, 73.00. 44.75 less 7.50 discount for DD payment.

Hmm, wonder if the NRA surfaced in the Panama Papers?

The thing is that the only group that has many semi-automatic assault style rifles would be the Trump supporting, Evangelical, NRA members.

@JE
Has your favourite site said anything about the recent polls from Quinnipiac University, Suffolk University and CNN/SSRS. They're even worse than the Marist poll.
They put the Disapprove number up at 58 or 60% with the Approve total between 35 and 38%

Over the past several days, something about the gun thread bugged me but I couldn't think of what & why? I have now. The fixation many have on the 2nd Amendment. It reminded me of the news stories on TV while growing. All those mobsters when questioned & if they didn't like the question?
"I plead the 5th Amendment".

Move on 50/60 years & the questions change. Why do you want to own a semi-automatic weapon?
"I plead the 2nd Amendment"

Doing some research on pleading the 5th & was surprised on what showed near the top of the list.

Where did he think he was? The Apollo Theatre?

I LOVE the way some posters weave their cloth out of pure conjecture and 'knowing' what's in others minds.
The thing is that the only group that has many semi-automatic assault style rifles would be the Trump supporting, Evangelical, NRA members.
'assault style rifle' what a joke of a term. The word assault tacked on to elicit a negative reaction from the reader. So that means an air impact gun is an 'assault wrench'.

And the idea that ownership is confined to 'Trump supporting, Evangelical, NRA members' is at best a misconception and at worst an outright lie designed to polarize. EVERY American Citizen, who can pass a background check can freely purchase any LEGAL firearm they choose, If some choose to stick their heads in the sand and pretend the Broward County Sheriff will protect them, they are victims of their own naivety and stupidity. The police usually arrive in time to arrange the body bags and take the witness reports.

Personal and Familial protection are ultimately the individual's responsibility. Firearms account for approximately 500 murders a year in the US. Knives account for around 1500 annually and it could be said many THOUSANDS are 'murdered' by impaired or distracted drivers of automobiles.

So lets ban knives, and cars. Or if not banned let's limit cars to 5 gallon gas tanks so they have to 'stop to reload'. A silly but very apt analogy.

Wayne LaPierre (the reviled satanic leader of the NRA), said "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." However, the 'good guy' must be willing to confront the bad guy, not cower in fear at the doorway.

Thank GOD the vast majority of law enforcement are not such useless 'goldfish' frozen in place. We have buried 3 deputies here in 2 months because they 'ran to the sound of gunfire, not away'.

And I feel my NRA dues each year is MUCH better spent than sending it to DC to fund studies of how fast a shrimp can run on a treadmill, or fund the murder of unborn babies. (Yeah, that's my evangelical side speaking not to mention my adopted side).

So you're not worried about the huge waste of your taxes in military procurement programs that have a basic design flaw - a flaw that was known about 200 years ago? A flaw from which there was not much change from 1 billion dollars?

I saw it. My reply was concerning your last sentence not the whole post, or couldn't you comprehend that? However if you agree with your taxes being wasted un-necessary & mentioned it rather or included it than just the 2 reasons you did, it would have not received the reply it did. :-)

The FBI says there were 11,004 homicides by firearm in 2016.
I think your figure of 500 is suicides.

Nope, not suicides...

That figure is MUCH higher.

In 2014, the number of suicides was 42826, with suicide by firearm being about half of those - 21386.

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr65/nvsr65_04.pdf#tab13

As to homicides in 2016...

Your figure of 11004 for homicides by firearm is correct.
I think that his figure of '500' is likely a reference to homicides by rifle (yes, this INCLUDES the AR-15). I recall seeing a news story on this from a week or so ago...
Homicides by rifle in 2016 was 374.
Homicides by knife in 2016 was 1604... A LOT higher (4.288x higher).
Data here:
https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2016/crime-in-the-u.s.-2016/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-4.xls

Alternately, it could by accidental deaths by firearm (a bit over 500, iirc... 505 in 2015).

Sigh, can't even agree on a count, sigh.

As to that waste on the ship, who did the design documents? Who approved them? 99.9% not a registered engineer, but a naval officer ordered to be something he isn't. Unfortunately the way contracts work, everyone who is building it knows it will fail, but they have to make it exactly like the signed contract. Modifying that is something the Government won't allow because that is how fraud sneaks in - intentionally designing faults in so expensive change orders have to be made.

Any comments on Rump's claim that he would have run headlong into an active shooter situation even if he were unarmed?
To show my support, I'd hold the door open for him so as not to slow down his big move.

In a further show of support, I would even push him into the building if I thought he wasn't running fast enough.
Just trying to be helpful.
