I don't know is this is the right forum for this, but here it goes. Seeing that Seti now accepts gridcoins for donations, I have decided to try and join Gridcoin, and see if I can get some coins. The idea is to donate the coins I get to Seti, so they can use them for whatever they need. I have found the learning curve to be _very_ steep. But everything seems to be working now. Anybody here with more experience, that have any good advice? |

Well, since I wrote the first post I have learned some things myself. To start up in Gridcoin without any Gridcoins in your wallet (or very few), is very hard, bordering on impossible. You have to have several thousand to get any kind of regular payouts. So if your going solo, your prospects are not good, unless you are willing to put some money / other coins into your Gridcoin wallet to get going. I have chosen another route. I have joined a pool. This means you give up all your credit (RAC), participating in the pool. But as a result you get regular payments, and can get some coins in your wallet pretty fast. Apart from loosing your BOINC credits, you also pay a small fee to the maintenance of the pool. In a couple of months, when I have accumulated enough coins to get payouts at least once every two weeks (or there about), I'll go solo again, and claim my credits for myself. Until then my RAC will be diving. But when I go solo again, I'll be in a position where all the coins I make can be donated to Seti@home. I'll just have to have some patience :) |

That's one of the flaws in all the crypto currencies in my opinion. You have to stake yourself first before you can start producing personal coin. It makes mining appear like a Ponzi scheme. At least you got started with a pool. Good luck to you. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

I joined the gridcoin system last week and a pool as well. Little baby steps. Its not raking in the millions (more like 20c a day lol) but at least you get 'paid' for work you are already doing - i.e. boinc projects, and hence reduces/eliminates the electricity usage that would be needed if one actually just crunched crypto currencies. Besides who knows how much these particular crypto currency will be worth in a few years. Experimentation is fun aint it? :P |

I see that your system is pretty much identical to mine. So if I can get 20c a day, I would be rather satisfied. I was hoping to do 10. I have an extra HD7770 crunching also, so perhaps I can get to 21 :) |

Yes, it sometimes does look like a scam. As I read it Gridcoin only recently became this hard to join. Not that long ago you could join, and start making coins within a few days, going solo. As it is now, if you don't have a larger amount of coins, you will not even get paid every 6 months (where the 1.5% interest starts to get deleted). So this has gotten much harder to get into, and that is kind of sad, as it will scare many peoble away. It almost did with me.... |

I see that your system is pretty much identical to mine. Also depends if you are running 24/7. But as you have two RX 480's, and assuming you aren't just running seti, you should be fine. I have 1 x Einstein@home running on my GPU and its credit score is far greater than other projects - it is the main generator of gridcoins on my rig. Unfortunately I am still waiting for the ability to crunch seti WU on my GPU once again. Hopefully that time will come soon. :) Happy crunching! |

Unfortunately I am still waiting for the ability to crunch seti WU on my GPU once again. Hopefully that time will come soon. :) Its not that Grant, its the simple fact that I am getting an error when AP tries to start crunching on my GPU. As per this thread: https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=82285 A bug report has been filed so we will see what gets fixed in the underlying Linux OpenCL subsystem. Aint living on the bleeding edge fun? :P Cheers |

I joined the gridcoin system last week and a pool as well. The more I read about the crypto currencies and especially the financial pundits views, it makes less sense to mine it directly. It makes more sense to just buy any coin outright on the spot market and ride the speculative valuation up to the top and cash out right after it starts to fall off the cliff. You can even buy into the new crypto hedge funds listing now. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Its not that Grant, its the simple fact that I am getting an error when AP tries to start crunching on my GPU. As per this thread: Anything cpu based will work. So far its only used AP on thd gpu. What app does seti use for multibeam under Linux and i will have a look later today as im not on my crunching machine atm. Cheers |

But as you have two RX 480's, and assuming you aren't just running seti, you should be fine. What appears as two RX480's is actually 1 RX480 and 1 HD7770. Boinc simply displays the best GPU, instead of showing them individually. I'm running a mix of different projects, and will be fine tuning to get the best payout as I go along, so to get to the point where I can go solo as fast as possible. I would like to run Seti at about 50% of the time, but we'll see how that pays off. Regarding MB's on GPU, it has been available from a time long before AP. So you should be able to find it. And AP's errors out on RXxx0's under windows too (they run fine on the HD7770). There is a bug in the code somewhere (either the driver or the app). For a short time I had Raistmer looking into it, but he seems to be busy with other things. |

From the latest Berkeley Online News which I receive in my mail, I learn that there is a UC Berkeley Blockchain Lab which has a received a Bitcoin donation amounting to 50000 USD from a Foundation called Echolink headed by Steve Chen. Members of the Security Exchange Commission have taken part in a conference organized by the Blockchain Lab. To attend it you had to pay 900 USD. I confess my ignorance of Blockchain. Maybe I shall take a course given by FutureLearn, a part of the UK Open University. The online courses are free , but to get tests and diplomas you have to pay. I have already taken three courses, one on the Higgs boson, one on gravity and one on quantum computers, and paid for the diplomas. I plan to enroll in the course on Cloud Computing next January. And AP's errors out on RXxx0's under windows tooBe glad you get an error. On my RX470 under Windows 7, they run to finish, but never validate, because the single pulses and repetitive pulses are always zero, with 90 percent blanked. |

Sorry, I was not clear. They dont error out, they just dont validate. Some of them does, but most of them don't. It is especially bad when two GPU's of the RXxx0 type validate against each other. The WU's validate, but the data is actually invalid. |

Mine wasnt even getting to that point, was failing on the start of the initialisation. We will see what happens in the future though ;) |

Its of course irritating that you cant get it to work, and I hope you find a fix. Its my impression that AMD support on the Linux platform has been much improved (extremely much), much of it because the drivers are now open source (AFAIK), so I think theres a good chance for it to get solved. I find it frustrating that the works gets done, time is spent, and then the results are invalid. I really hope this gets fixed one day. |

It is a good thing I clicked on this thread; found out I could donate my Gridcoin to directly benefit my first and favorite BOINC project. So far, I kicked in 700 (about $50.00) to the kitty! Have a great holiday season, all! |

Well, then you're welcome :) I sent them 1 GRC yesterday, just to see how it works. Its all very new to me :) Now I'm just twidling my thumbs, waiting for coins to start rolling in from the pool (it takes time to build up your magnitude). |
