Just shows you what can happen when everyone pulls together for a worthy cause. An absolutely fantastic result and very many thanks to everybody that was able to contribute in whatever way.

Thanks everyone for the awe inspiring response. For those who donate through GPUUG/Paypal, I'll start entering your donations in the database as soon as I can. If you donated by check, it will take a little longer.

but making some adjustments - for examples, Mr. Kevvy's matching payments show up in that list. There are also some donations shown on the GPUUG website. We'll make sure there's a final reckoning posted when everything has made its way through the banking system,

Which may take quite a while for snail mailed checks. My donation check has been logged at the site but still hasn't made an appearance for clearing at the bank. Considering how long it took the mail to get delivered and picked up, I expect the Finance Dept of the University will take an equally long time to present the donations for clearing.

Al, at least the new server should be named in honor of you, Richard and Mr K. I propose the name ARK.
I'm good for that, but all things considered, and thinking on it for a little while now knowing everything he's done, I'd like to propose modifying it slightly, in his honor. Instead of ARK, how about RAK? Because we certainly use that term (well, at least a variation on it) here at the project, and I'd feel better knowing that Richard is leading the parade. Thoughts everyone?

Quick question if anyone knows. I see that the WS has been spec'ed with 2 NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan XP Graphics Cards. I am not familiar with them, and was wondering if they were the Titan version of the 1080Ti's, so I did a quick Google of them and pulled up Nvidia's site. Reading under the specs, something caught my eye - under Supplementary Power Connectors it listed them as One 8-pin and One 6-pin. I thought that was unusual, as my 1080Ti cards have two 8 pin connectors, and as the Titan I thought was supposed to be the (slightly) bigger brother to the top 1080 card, those 2 missing power pins seemed to indicate something altogether different. Anyone know the scoop on the XP cards, esp. compared to the 1080Ti version?

And then after doing a little more clicking around the interwebs, I came across this: First Titan V benchmarks show how it compares to a GTX 1080 Ti

Seeing how you can never seem to have enough horsepower, would this be a worthy upgrade? Def not cheap, though, but if it is more appropriate for the use that this system is going receive...?

I believe Eric already stated the Titan V would not be suitable because it doesn't have enough memory. And the development system for the brand new Tensor core sub-system is still in infancy and may not be suitable for a production environment yet.

I think it depends on where you got your 1080ti's from. My EVGA 1080Ti have 8+6 connections

Thanks for the kind words, Al, and for the thought, but I'd like to decline. It took all four of us, and the leader should be Eric - he put the team together.

I like the original idea of ARK. At some time in the future, the human race is going to need one of those - in four billion years, if not before.

I like to think that traditional astronomy is drawing the map and starting to write the destination guides: our job is getting to know the neighbours, so we don't repeat the colonial errors of our forefathers.

I'd like to do this again sometime, but with the emphasis on staffing for a change. So I'm trying to think up an acronym that could include Eric, but the only one I can come up with is 'freak' - which might describe me, but isn't fair on the rest of you. Perhaps we could recruit a couple more for STREAK?

I wouldn`t describe you as a freak Richard.
Just consistent.
I also like the idea of ARK.
Not to forget Thank you to each and everyone who made this possible.

If I hadn't taken the hit, it would have read as if I was calling Eric the freak - and we certainly know that isn't true!

Ok Richard, ARK it is then. It too has a significance about it, a little more existential ring to it.
