Hi folks,

I think that this is the right forum to post this announcement, and I hope that posting a video link doesn't violate this forum's rules.

I've built a retro-style, dedicated BOINC processor farm and made a video of it. Although it's just a single-machine farm right now, more machines will be added going forward.

It is, in effect, a big "case mod" that's been a lot fun to design and build. And, it does a lot of work.

My video heavily promotes BOINC, and shows SETI@Home work units being crunched.

Thanks.

Meowwow.
That is beyond way cool!
I can see that much time and effort was put into that project.
Very nice fabrication on the custom enclosures.

Hey Kittyman,

It is a "CM Storm QuickFire Rapid - Tenkeyless Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with Cherry MX Blue Switches", and the keycaps have been replaced with a "DSA "Dolch" Keyset" keycap set.

https://www.amazon.com/Storm-QuickFire-Rapid-Tenkeyless-Mechanical/dp/B0068INSUM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1512667720&sr=8-1&keywords=B0068INSUM
https://pimpmykeyboard.com/dsa-dolch-keyset/

It has a nice feel and sound. The Dolch keycap set is of very high quality. The only immediate issue was that the keycap set covered up the LEDs in the SCR LK and CAPS LOCK keys, but no big deal. You can fix that by drilling a very small hole in front side those keycaps.

I use the 10-key version of this keyboard at work (with stock keycaps) and after a about a year I've found that the lettering on the most heavily used keys start to fade/wear off and it sometimes sends bogus characters that I didn't type. Due to this, I'd give the keyboard about a 6 rating in a scale of 1 to 10. You'd think that a gamer keyboard would be extremely durable. Maybe the newer version of this keyboard has these problems fixed.

I'm not seeing any evidence of this wear with the replacement keycap set, but this keyboard doesn't have continual use and wear and tear.

Thanks! I shall check that out. Love the 'old school' sound it has.

Wow...nice build.

Reminds me of way way back when I started in IT. I was a Computer Operator on IBM S/38s and AS400..(and a 4341).
Stone age technology by today's measure but it was a blast to work with.

Mithotar,

Thanks. You probably recognized some of the hardware I used, then!

Of all the IBM systems I've experienced or used in my career (S/360, S/370, 43xx, 30xx, System/3, /32, /34, z Systems), I never experienced a System/38 or an AS400, but wished I had. I hear that the S/38 was a really slick machine and I love the look of it, but its RPG III was a really strange beast compared to RPG II.
