I was wondering if anyone is using a non-overclocked, air-cooled AMD Threadripper 1950X for Seti@Home crunching, or for that matter, any BOINC crunching?

If so, what have been your temperatures?

It seems like the Noctua NH-U9 might be able to keep it cool enough at typical 100% BOINC loads and still be able to fit in a 4U case, but I haven't seen any actual results posted anywhere.

You might want to talk to Ruelke. He has a TR but I believe it is water cooled. I just did a Google search and immediately hit on two separate reviews of Noctua air coolers and TR4 test results. I don't know why you didn't find them.

I am using water cooling on my TR. Temps are usually in the mid 30's C.
One thing that you really have to take into consideration is the ambient air temp in the room the computer is in . You see right now it is late Fall/early Winter here and the room my computer is in regularly gets down to below 0 C. It all depends on how open I leave the door to the garager and of course the outside temp.
I think that ambient air temp is a critical factor. I will probably have to shut down in the Summer as the AC in that small room does not seem to do a lot of good.
Earlier this Fall the temps were in the mid 60's C.

I forgot you had a TR too, Bill. Yes with a 180W TDP dissipation at STOCK you most definitely need good room ambient temps. I re-engineered the AC ductwork into my computer room this summer which houses my two Ryzens to improve the air flow and ambient temps. Still running in the low to mid 60's ° C. core temperatures with the water temps in the mid 30's ° C. Temps not an issue now with Autumn here.

Thank you. I was referring to Threadripper temperatures while running 100% BOINC tasks. I have seen reviews of the Noctua products for Threadrippers while running other stressors such as Prime95.

My experience with other platforms show that there are sometimes big differences between the two scenarios. For example, my FX-8350 8-core with a Noctua cooler will hit 60+ C. running Prime95, while a real-life scenario of running 100% BOINC tasks show temps in the upper 40s or low 50s in normal ambient room temperatures.

Depends on the app. The AVX apps run hotter. Those are similar temps for my FX processors. The Ryzens run much hotter because they have a lot more cores running. Since TR is just two Ryzen 1800X in the same package, you can expect similar thermals. The biggest difference is that the dies used to make TR are the best of the best, cherry picked dies and run at the lowest Vcore voltages possible for the same core clocks as Ryzen. In the TR threads I read, I see lots of TR systems running at 1.2V~~ at 4 Ghz. No chance in **ll for my Ryzen 1700X and 1800X to get those clocks at those core voltages.

I think Bill answered your question about temps when running BOINC. But he did say that he is watercooled. Some of the tests in the those articles I linked would have stressed TR similarly or close enough to get an idea of where TR runs when air cooled by a Noctua cooler.
