The whole shebang revolves around punishing the wrongdoer, and a lesson to others not to transgress. How unpleasant do you want to make the punishment, and how strong the deterrent.

In theory, prison is supposed to be a place of reflection, contrition and rehabilitation. The reality of prison life, however, is probably not that in most cases.

Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole is an unfortunate necessity that I think should rarely be exercised. Sentencing someone to this fate is a public reminder of our collective shame because it is essentially saying: "We don't know how to help you, and we do not expect to know how to help you for the remainder of your years. You have lost the right to walk freely among us because, untreated, you are a threat to our safety. You were convicted of terrible things, but we have also failed you."

And some after being released are punished, ostracized, even have rocks thrown at their windows to chase them away, one manager here blamed the ex-con for the rocks, said He did it, I saw the glass was broken on the inside, She didn't care, She just wanted them out of here(She was later fired), I know of one ex-con and His GF who were along with 4 dogs(then 4 became 3 dogs, 1 died), who became homeless, where they are now I don't know, I've lost track of them.

Well then, if I were an defense attorney I would "thank and excuse" you from serving on a jury. And if I were a prosecuting attorney, I would "thank and excuse" me from serving on that same jury.

As in all things, I suppose the real answer lies in some gray area in between.

I always found it a curious contradiction of U.S. so-called "neo-conservative" thought that the government is considered to to be incompetent and untrustworthy, except for the most important and serious decision: which citizens should be put to death, at which point the government magically becomes perfect and inerrant.

Or maybe they just don't care about the "collateral damage" of the 4% or so who are innocent.

(Edit: and I overlooked the big one of being "Pro-Life" but for the death penalty. Er... ?)

Does this mean that you would not recognize a plea of insanity for an adult?
Charles Manson's behavior I would describe as insane. I am no psychologist, but I do know that psychology is a a qualitative rather than quantitative science, and has been known to be pressured to obtain "desired" diagnoses at times... wouldn't want to deprive The Public of a good hanging for a detested criminal of course.
