Hello Everyone

I searched but could not find a thread for my question.

Is anyone using an ASUS Tinker Board to crunch SETI? I've been interested in them for a while but held off due to the reviews mentioning problems with the OS. Recently came across a reference to Armbian and they seem to have a stable operating system that can run SETI so my interest is rekindled.

I would be interested in hearing about people's setup, what issues thayhave encountered and what kind of RAC they have been getting.

Is this going to be cruncher-only system?

I don't have a ASUS Tinker Board, but it should run the ARM Linux Seti@Home app under Armbian. I run Armbian on an Orange Pi One and it runs the Seti app fine.

Why go for a Tinker board rather than such as a Raspberry Pi?

Is this going to be cruncher-only system?

I currently have two Raspberry Pi3s running SETi full time and I have a third that was running SETI but now is running as a low power desktop for light duties and general fiddling around.

I'm just interested in the Tinker Board and it's capabilities. It looks like the Mali GPU supports open CL so GPU crunching should be available.

I guess I'm just looking for a different challenge having found the Raspberries to almost be too easy. The Raspberry Pi foundation had done an excellent job at bringing low cost computing to the world.

What kind of RAC are you getting on the Orange? You have so many computers going its difficult to tell which is the Orange.

My Orange Pi One is https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=8201530. Its current RAC is 333. Off AliExpress they are about $14 with shipping. You need a heatsink, micro SD card, and a power source (mine is solar powered).

You noted that the ASUS Tinker Board Rockchip has Open CL. I also have a odroid XU4 that has a Mali GPU that supports Open CL. The issue is that no one has compiled a Seti app that runs on it yet. I've looked into it, but I'm not sure if the Seti servers would send work units to an ARM device with a Open CL GPU app either.

As you can see here there are only OpenCL applications for AMD/ATI, Intel and nVidia GPUs.
Given the lack of (video)RAM on the various ARM boards, it will be quite a job of porting the existing code to the ARM platform.
For the time being, you will have to do with the power of the quad-core ARM Cortex A17 that the Tinker Board offers.
