I was never impressed with the 1080s to begin with (especially the reference designed ones. Nvidia original was underpowered when it had that 6 pin connector. Glad they finally upgrade it to a 8 pin). Why I went with 1070 FTWs. Basically produced the same as the 1080s. At least for this project. If you want to use it for other project then stepping up to a 1080 or 1080Ti then it would make sense, given their better specs.

I think it's up to the OP to decided how much he wants to spend on this build. I think 2 cards would be fine.

SLI isn't recommended when crunching for any project, it actually hinders the work (FYI) I reread the original post and saw no one commented on that.

All the YT and PC website reviewers always refer to open shroud graphics cards as from AIB vendors. Just following the standard lingo that is being used. If you don't specifically state it is a reference design, it is inferred it is a vendor cooling and power design . Yes the EVGA GTX 1060 is an ACX, open shroud, twin fan design.

I posted a PM to someone yesterday who asked about whether to get two 1070s or a single 1080Ti. After composing the post and adding up the plusses and minuses, I came to the conclusion that two 1070s barely beat a single 1080Ti in Compute Units. The 1080 Ti has less total power draw, costs less than two 1070s and probably has better clocks because it would have a more cherry picked gpu chip.

Every Nvidia driver point release seems to have a fix or new profile for SLI in every game. Must be a thorn in the developers side all the time I would imagine. And I don't think the cards from the last two generations scale very well in SLI compared to past generations when going SLI actually gave you an improvement in game play. But this opinion is all from the side for me since I have never gamed and just what I read from between the lines.

I would assume all the board vendors will come up with their optimized designs a few months after Nvidia releases the reference GTX 1070 Ti as has always occurred previously.

While it might be "sexy" to have multiple fans on each GPU, as others have pointed out there are issues with them - two of the most serious is the fans appear to be less reliable than those used in the single fan "base model", and they do tend to make the interior of the case a lot hotter than the single fan base models because a lot of the exhaust air ends up inside the case.
For crunching you do not need SLI or any other GPU combining technology. In my experience using these technologies reduces the performance quite considerably.

How much do you want to spend? - You are already capped to an extent by wanting to use a 750w PSU, which realistically restricts you to 2 GTX1080 or GTX1080ti GPUs given the power demands of modern motherboards, chip sets and memory etc.

I would go with a Corsair 115i cooler for the top, and 850W PSU so it's not running near full load.

Yeah, you gotta have some headroom on the PSU.
Don't wanna try running it at full tilt 24/7.

I do think the Enermax would be better suited for the Threadriipper, both the 360 and 240 would do a fine job of cooling and getting the heat out of the case.

Got everything installed except the memory and the cooler and those should be coming in by the end of the week. However, there is still the nagging issue regarding the motherboard. I had thought I had gotten one that could house three cards, but my current set-up doesn't make that possible. The case is perfect, it's just that the board itself can only fit two of these 1080Ti cards. The last PCI slot is unusable since the card would be pressing against many of the cable connections on the lower end of the card.

While I'm looking, does anyone know of a decent motherboard that can house a 16 core threadripper AND hold three of these graphics cards? I think my big problem is that I don't know enough about motherboard terminology to do a proper search.

Fitting a card over the connectors is 'usually' OK as long as the connectors are not rigid. Audio and USB2 connectors normally have the connector, then wire leads, which when bent over give you just enough room for a card. You might have to move some wiresaround for a 3rd card, but it should work. There are also short flexible to rigid adaptors available if needed. I think you will be fine for the future ....

I have the same board and case as you do and there would be room for a third card in the MB. I did have to add an extentiion cable to two of the fan leads to go around the cards, but otherwise I see no problem with having three cards. I have put the second card in both locations testing that out as I only have two of them (wating to upgrade to 3 at some point).
I did remove half of the HD cage to give me additional space.

I ran into that problem myself with my ASUS boards. ASUS likes you to use their "Q-connector" that enables you to plug in all your case front I/O cables into that intermediate connector out in the open where you can see the identifiers and then plug the Q-connector onto the motherboard I/O header. But that extends the height of the connections above the motherboard by a good 1 -1/4" and interferes with full length graphics cards in the bottom PCIe slot. Also ASUS recently has put the case front panel USB 3.0 header right on the bottom of the motherboards directly beneath that bottom PCIe slot. The solution is to just plug the case I/O connector directly onto the I/O header. Those connectors are only 1/2 " long and will bend over and clear a long GPU with no issues. I had to find a USB 3.0 20 pin extender to fit the case USB 3.0 cable. I tried the right-angle connector first but it too stands too proud to clear a gpu. What I then ordered was the connector with a low profile header plug with flying leads to the female 20 pin connector. The flying leads bend over and clear the gpu with no problem.

ASUS also puts the USB 2.0 motherboard headers on the bottom edge but I have never had any issue plugging in the USB 2.0 cables and clearing the gpu. For example the Corsair Link USB cables plug in fine and clear with no issues.
