I had a power outrage this morning, for some unknown reason Boinc started up without SETI, something to do with being unable to read "account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml". Had to do a full reinstall and all tasks were abandoned. Kevin |

Whenever I have had a bad crash on a computer I often found two files the most likely to have been corrupted. First is the accounts file as in your case and the other is usually the statistics file. Definitely makes the case to have current backups of the main BOINC and project directory files. I have restored both files a couple of times after crashes and saved reinstalling software and losing tasks. Rather than starting a new thread for my griping I'll use this one for my apologies post... Lost this machine for now. It had been running at 35% CPU and with the cover off because the cooler was not sufficient. Ordered and installed a new Noctua cooler... task went so smoothly not even dropping a screw or missing any wiring, started up first pull and ran between 40-55C. Was I happy with this? No, when things go too well, it always means they will... ... blow the *#@% motherboard two hours later. |

I wonder if the motherboard flexed too much when screwing down the Noctua cooler. I was alarmed at how much force it required to start the threads on the Noctua NH-D15 AM4 cooler I used for a month until the Corsair AM4 bracket kit arrived. Saw the motherboard flex down quite a bit. And if you ever slipped your screwdriver when pushing that hard, you would definitely cause damage to the motherboard where the bit end hits. I have 72 lost tasks I have tried tricking the scheduler but it seems to be not working they should all be returned to the wild by end of November |

It's one of the smaller coolers, but that is definitely an issue with them (I had to wire the cooler to the chassis on one machine so it wasn't stressing the board when sideways.) However, I had taken the board/CPU to the techs. at the chain I bought them from initially for the diagnosis of whether it was the MB or CPU (didn't want to wreck another machine for spare parts to find out) and they had initially said it was the MB but then said it had only failed a Northbridge test. Well damned if it doesn't work now... I have no idea what went wrong in the first place as reconnecting everything didn't change it at all, and now it's just run all night. <<shrug>> I'll just count my rare good fortune and be done with it. :^) |

Might have knocked a connector, RAM, or something else out of place whilst mounting the cooler. Or maybe the CPU got jostled enough to break loose a contact and then it settled back into place whilst taking the mobo in and out. In any case, congrats for your good luck. Hope it holds for you.
