My thoughts go out to all in that area.

Especially to my step-son, his wife and their children just outside Orlando in Florida. I hope that Irma steps aside from there.

Retreating to the wine cellar? Sounds good to me.
But seriously, my thought and prayers go out to everyone in the effected areas. I have been in contact with friend on boats and they have all headed south. No one I know has opted to try to ride it out.

Seriousness of the situation aside, I agree.
I mean, if you're gonna go out, why not go out in a wine cellar?

Hurricane Irma: UK response found wanting, MPs say

A concrete house w/roll up storm shutters, except for some tiles being missing, seems to have survived IRMA.
Still glad I wasn't there, and I hope the people there can get all the help they need.

Chris, is there any help going on in the UK, to resettle BVI inhabitants to the UK?

Please do. It sounds to me Barbuda should not be resettled.

And it's now at category 4, gaining strength, and due to hit the Keys in about an hour.

We've just heard from our son, near Orlando.

All the shops and Parks are closed. Holidaymakers are heading North. Light rain atm. They've been told to expect the main risk to be between 18:00 tonight and 06:00 tomorrow.

They're staying in their home, and they've lowered the water level in their pool by about 6 inches as it's close to the house (I'm not too sure this is enough). Their previous home had storm shutters, but he decided not to get them for this home (I hope they don't regret this choice.) They've cut the trees in their front and back gardens down and hoping for the best.

We're both thinking of them
Happy Crunching,

Graham

I think a sharp right turn then a spiral path over water followed by Jose etc. would be the best , if unlikelyest outcome.

One report I heard on the radio about the earthquake in Mexico was that they hadn't had any sizeable aftershocks and that was of bigger concern than the quake itself. There are several suggested reasons this, first is that this was actually a pre-quake for a much bigger event (rare), that all the stored energy has been released (even more rare), that the geologists don't understand what's going on (probable).
One thing that is clear is that the location and local geology of Mexico City makes the place more vulnerable to the effects of a nearby quake than one would reasonably expect. The place is built on the bed of a drained lake which has two amplifying effects, first is the ground "shakes like a jelly", and second the shape of the bowl can amplify ground movement, thus the sort of damage that has been seen in both the 1985 and yesterday's quake.
Another thing is that both these quakes occurred on the same date (19th September).

Sitting at the junction of a number of plates is at the root of the number of earthquakes, and leads to an "expected level of damage". But sit the city in a bowl on a jelly and everything gets worse, far worse.
At least this time they don't appear to have suffered much liquefaction of the ground - last time a fair proportion of the damage was caused by buildings and structures partially sinking into the ground then falling over. Perhaps this is a benefit of the massive reduction in ground water levels in the area which has been caused by low rainfall and ever increasing water abstraction?

As I said earlier, Mount Etna is not dangerous, since it empties its lava contents regularly. Mount Vesuvio is much more dangerous, its last eruption was in 1944. The Campi Flegrei caldera near Naples is even more dangerous.
I've tried to connect to Arecibo but the connection was timed out. Probably they are getting prepared for the passage of Maria, as NASA did with IRMA.

The NYTimes says that Maria has landed in Puerto Rico this morning. Electrical and telephone lines are cut off so that is why the Arecibo site can't be seen.

The Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico will cease observations today (Sept. 18) through Thursday (Sept. 21) and keep its visitor center closed through Sept. 28, due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Maria, officials said today on Twitter.
