Number crunching :
Come on admit it, you have an E5-2670 crunching on Boinc and/or Seti@Home. How is it doing?

Hi, As a nearly brand new owner of a 2 cpu E5-2670 Windows box I am trying to find more people with such hardware and see how they are "doing". eg. what kind of RAC, what kind of cpu tasks / day are you experiencing? I would be interested in the results of Linux boxes too. I have one person who is apparently cranking out 32,000+ RAC on a box with no gpu processing. I have had to reinstall from scratch, twice while experimenting with Raid 1 (thou shall backup EVERYTHING next time!) So even with the help of a Gtx 1060 I am still south of 10,000 RAC after two days :) So what are your(s) doing? Brag a little :D Thank you, Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

Have it up since a while but currently only folding with GPU on SETI. Going to switch to 2 x XEON 2697 V2 then i will run seti together on CPU again. Those are the fastest ( most cores ) CPU for my main board, and where also cheap. ( maybe if someone is interested, 2 x 2670 for sale ) |

Running 2 dual E5-2670 (v1) machines, one with dual Strix GTX 1080s, the other with 3 ref GTX 980s. They are running in the 80-90K RAC range. Both are running with HT on and 3 WU/GPU. (Each runs 24 CPU WUs in // + GPUs). AP on GPUs ONLY as I found that an AP running on CPU took ~9-10 hours to run (sse2), so no advantage over MB on CPU. |

For the past month or two I've been running 31 SETI@home tasks and 1 CPDN task on the one I've had up since October. It's currently averaging ~31,500 and I believe the range since it leveled off is something like 28-35,000. At some point I might put a pair of 1050 Ti's or RX 560's in for fun. What is a "CPDN" task (probably its not "Canadian Pharmaceutical Distribution Network")? Ok, got it. Your running one of the 6+ day Climateprediction tasks. I am not clear about how you are constraining the cpus to only 24 when you have 32 available? Using the Boinc cpu preferences? How do you make the AP gpu only? I am currently running Seti stock because I want to get a solid 2-3 week baseline. I think I remember the Lunatic beta6 setup offering AP for gpu and/or cpu and that might be where you set it? I suppose you could only have one cpu but that doesn't fit the 2 forsale note. Have you been experimenting with production with HT off and are finding it faster? 1) I am using the cpu% setting in BOINC along with app_config.xml to set how BOINC allocates cpus and gpus for seti. Works out to 24 CPU MBs and 9 gpu MBs and APS on the 3x980 system and 25 and 6 on the 2x1080 box. 2) using Lunatics Beta6 which allows me to specify no AP on cpu while allowing AP to run on gpu. |

Yes i am running with HT off, as it is about half an hour faster on the WCG units, also the GPU units are faster with HT off, but this only is a matter of seconds. The SETI CPU WU's i only crunch on GPU for now. But are also faster with HT off on my system. On the 1080 Ti i'm doing 2 WU's at a time. Also still experimenting with the HT though, it consumes more power that i'll have to pay, plus a big question is the WCG units... its for the good of cancer treatment and all, BUT do I have a benefit of it? Probably the medicine being developed from the use of our computers, will be too expensive to pay for us normal folks, so i was thinking to stop that completely and dedicate all CPU to SETI. |

I understand but since I have had cancer crop up as well as kill in my family I am going to be continuing to crunch it on both my "other" box and probably on my Jupiter2 aka: E5-2670. I haven't had mine long enough to want to try ringing in changes to see what works faster. I'm still running Stock Seti to see if I can make it up past 30, 000 RAC. Once it "settles" I expect I will switch to Lunatic beta6 (unless there is a later one by then) because they have a AVX-based cpu app (8.00 I think) that drops the time quite a bit. On a faster cpu machine (3.4Ghz) that was running 2 1/2 to 3 hours it dropped it to about 1 3/4 hours. I will have to see how it does on the E5. One of the reasons I bought it is because of that AVX support. Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

After the DNS problems started this week I both setup my "hosts" file and added a couple of projects I like. Then Seti started sending the E5/gtx1060 "Cuda42" tasks. As well as Cuda50. At the suggestion of another Setizen I have emptied out my parm files for those two tasks to "slow" them down even further. But so far it keeps sending them. :) I do NOT want to go Lunatics, yet! The RAC curve has flattened to just above 16,000 because of the DNS problem and the non-SOG gpu tasks. Here 30,000+, here 30,000+ :) Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

Running stock applications the servers do this sometimes, just to make sure that you are running the "best possible" application. Let them run through to completion and validation, eventually the servers will work out that CUDA50 is slightly faster than CUDA42 on a GTX1060. Why would you run not SoG? Sorry I wasn't clear. Right now I am running Stock Seti. I want to see how high a production level I can get w/o switching to Lunatics beta6. The seti scheduler controls what is sent in Stock Seti. And has started sending me Cuda42/50's instead of SOG for some reason. While I am exploring the possibility of using the app_info.xml file to "force" the Cuda42/50 data files to be processed by the stock SOG application I am not sure if that is technically feasible. I have manually aborted a 50+ Cuda42 tasks. So it "cheerfully" sent a bunch more Cuda50 tasks and a few more 42's :( The GuppiRescheduler hasn't moved enough gpu tasks to cpu for me to see that will help. I am responding to this message before I take a look at how it is doing today (Saturday). Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

After I responded to the previous message I went over and looked at the E5/Jupiter2 box and it still had Cuda42/50's displayed. I decided I didn't care. So I made sure all the other projects were "don't get any new tasks" and then I "user aborted" all the Cuda42/50 tasks except one that was running and one more Cuda50. So Seti scheduler sent me a bunch of Cuda42/50's and apparently 4 SOG's. So I user aborted the Cuda42/50's again. So Seti scheduler sent me a bunch of SOG tasks. (And then apparently some more Cuda50 tasks, so I just user aborted those again). Since the general idea is to get maximum performance from Seti Stock and because I am not one of those top performers who doesn't want to screw up their RAC I guess my impatience had a fairly good result (this time). As soon as you set up an app_info.xml file you will report as running optimised applications. This is a feature of BOINC, as it is considered that by using app_info.xml you are optimising the performance in some way or other - in your case it would be by selecting to run the SoG application rather than the random selection of applications that are normally delivered. Ok. For the time being I am manually aborting Cuda42/50 tasks. Then running the Guppirescheduler. So it moved some 50 non-Guppi's into the gpu queue. I run everything on GPU, 3 tasks at the same time. A guppi task runs approx 8 minutes. Don't really see the benefit from the schedular in my situation. I'm running a 1080Ti though. I hope a faster gpu app will be made in time, i am a gamer, i like to play games when i want to. Don't want to restart to change os all the time. Don't think i am the only one in this situation. The SOG app is very good for me, and thank raistmer and the testers for that :D Fastest setting i run now is this: -sbs 1024 -spike_fft_thresh 4096 -tune 1 64 1 4 -oclfft_tune_gr 256 -oclfft_tune_lr 16 -oclfft_tune_wg 256 -oclfft_tune_ls 512 -oclfft_tune_bn 128 -oclfft_tune_cw 128 -hp -period_iterations_num 1 -high_prec_timer -high_perf -tt 1500 -instances_per_device 6 -cpu_lock And now with HT on. I found that running multiple units together on GPU it does not affect the performance that worse in my configuration, it's a mater of seconds, and is nice with the 32 threads you can still do other things easy aswell. I wish i could overclock the xeon's, but sadly my board does not support overclocking. All is running liquid cooled. |

I get the impression that you are running World Computing Grid as your main cpu task(s)? Thank for sharing your command line parameters. Apparently my Gtx 1060 (and all others) don't do multiple Seti/SOG work units. They slowdown too much. :( Do you use automatic "suspend the gpu when computer is in use" for your gaming or what? What games are you currently enjoying? Thanks, Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |
