Looks interesting but $349 for a motherboard is not shabby.

Just took a quick look at it, really haven't bought any new desktop boards in a while, is it normal nowadays for them to only have 3 full sized PCI-e slots in them? Maybe I've become spoiled by the server boards I have been using recently. Also, is that a full sized ATX board, or more of a mini(ish) version? Looks smaller than a regular one, but it could be the pic, or again what I am used to looking at around here.

Al, ;)

This board is designed for the Asus Stricx GPUs. Those are 2.5 slots each.

So you can't have the GPUs right next to each other as their isn't enough room. So they spread them out to allow for room and airflow but sacrifice a 4th PCIe slot.

Personally I'm spoiled like Al with the server Mobo and 4 PCIe slots.

Nice board but I wouldn't buy it (for my needs)

Thanks for the heads up, they must be only dual card setups then, as there is extra room next to the one closest to the CPU, but the 2 nearer the edge of the board appear to be standard PCI-e spacing, unless you don't use the one closest to the edge, of course. And in the other direction, I see people cutting off the HDMI or whatever connector off the ends of cards to allow single slot water cooling, like one the was linked on a thread here that had I think 7 or 8 water cooled 1080's. Insane. And isn't it amazing what you can do with unlimited (other than your imagination) resources? ;-)

I next think they should go by the name Asus, because they are quite decent at what they are supposed to be doing.

I've wondered why the newer boards are designed as such, that explains it.

For desktops it was normal for only one x16 slot in a motherboard. Then a lot of manufacturers started offering 2. Even now, 3 is about the maximum unless it's an extreme high end motherboard, and generally it's only the higher end motherboards that have the wider spacing between the slots for larger GPU cooler assemblies.

EDIT-
The problem is finding a good multi PCIe x16 slot motherboard, without all the flashing LEDs, huge plastic "things" over the regulators and elsewhere & other rubbish.
Just a good solid board with 4 PCIe x16 slots is all i'd be after.

Nice, but at that price, you're in the server board neighborhood. Though potentially procs and memory could be a bit more $, and for the most part overclocking is out, but they are usually designed to be ran hard 24x7, so it would be an tough call for me. Def a nice looking, $500+ board though!

I do have one question about it though, it says Quad Strength Graphic Power – 4-Way PCI-E Gen3 x16 link supporting NVidia GeForce SLI and AMD CrossFireX on demand, and I didn't realize that 4 PCI-e X16 slots were possible on a single proc motherboard, as don't the top end ones only have like 40 total lanes available? They working some kind of magic there somehow, or, more likely, I am missing something?

Sorry Al, I post that for Grant who wanted 4 PCIe X16...Yeah when you are talking that many lanes, you are going to be paying big $$

Edit..

The trick with 4 x16 PCIe is the PLX chip...

You can google it and there are lots of websites that talk about it but what it comes down to is a chip that rapidly (we are talking microseconds) like a train track in a train yard. It switches those lanes to the PCIe that needs it. But happens so fast, it's as if it was trues 4 x16 lanes. But you are going to pay for that chip.

Other sources say the chip gives you extra lanes (don't know how true that it) I think it more like the way I describe it above.

But thing is, top of the line Intel is only 44 lanes. Thread ripper is a true 64 lane (possible 4 reserved for other functions) but that would allow you to build a MoBo that could use all 64 lanes on that Chip.

So even if you did get that ASUS X99, you need the chip with the most Lanes to make max use of it.

Oh no Zalster, no worries, I too lust after as many full PCI-e lanes as possible myself, that is, until the MB stops recognizing the video cards after some quantity (5? 6?) due to memory space limitations... Grrrr.

I'd be happy if they were just *4, but at the very least they can provide the slots even if they don't all run at *16 speeds.
