Two other papers are saying the same thing. No Aliens.

The Mystery Behind a 40-Year-Old Signal From Outer Space May Finally Be Solved

On August 15th 1977, a radio telescope located at Ohio State University detected something strange. The telescope was scanning the stars searching for possible signals from alien civilizations as part of the SETI project, and on that date it found something. The telescope recorded an incredibly strong signal appearing to come from somewhere in the direction of Sagittarius; the signal only lasted about a minute and was never detected again.

Setizens judge for yourselves. :)

In 2012, the 35th anniversary of the Wow! signal, Arecibo Observatory beamed a digital stream toward the area of the signal's origin. The transmission consisted of approximately 10,000 Twitter messages solicited for the purpose by the National Geographic Channel, bearing the hashtag "#ChasingUFOs" (a promotion for one of the channel's TV series). The sponsor also included a series of video vignettes featuring verbal messages from various celebrities.

To increase the probability that any extraterrestrial recipients would recognize the signal as an intentional communication from another intelligent life form, Arecibo scientists attached a repeating-sequence header to each individual message, and beamed the transmission at roughly 20 times the wattage of the most powerful commercial radio transmitter.[

So, how long to get there, and how long to receive a reply?

Thanks for your reply Chris. :)

The article said the WOW, Signal was caused by comets. Also it's said might have been a computer glitch.

Jury seems to be out on the signal. For Now.

Wow! mystery signal from space finally explained

This one appears to be settled.

Ceterum censeo, ref. climate change, that Mr Donald Trump and the USA have established themselves as enemies of planet Earth and mankind. This needs to be settled.

Not settled, nor solved, methinks. Dr. Paris observed some radio emissions from comets. Not too surprising, given that they are surrounded by hydrogen gas. The emissions were quite weak, in comparison to the 'wow signal', even when the smaller antenna he used was allowed for. Paris had to invoke a scenario in which the comets lost much of their signal-producing gas, since 1977. This is possible, but very speculative. The comets might have produced more gas, via sublimation, as comets are won't to do.

Even more concerning: Dr. Paris was able to observe the comets on a number of days, during their recent pass.
Comets move relatively slowly through space. Shouldn't the OSU SETI project, which detected the 'wow signal', have detected it on a number of following days, too, if it were from a comet? It didn't. And, yes, they did look for the wow signal on subsequent days.

The encouraging thing for me is that people are still interested in this. :~)

The salient point here is that too many people WANT there to be a WOW! signal, so they are clutching at straws. If there is a genuine one, then there is. End of story.

Exactly true Lynn. There is no real hard evidence for either. It is simply up to peoples individual faith in what they want, or maybe more need to, believe in. Personally I think evidence for ET may be found a lot sooner than for any God, but there you are. In the meantime the UFO brigade and various religions make a lot of money out of encouraging peoples beliefs.

Although the conundrum is that if ET landed on the White House lawn tomorrow morning we would see them as gods with their technology!!**

The chance that ET lands in Russia is much greater than in USA:)

Landing on the White House lawn is an old phrase for the shock horror reaction if they actually did. In practice any object on a course to land anywhere would be followed by the words radar and likely shot down by one air force or another as hostile. It would make more sense to warn earth of their arrival similar to the Close Encounters film.

If ET has Klingon cloaking and radar evasion techniques, and lands on earth they might likely want their presence not be be noted until they are ready to reveal themselves. In which case Russia probably has more unpopulated Sq Kilometres that the USA. But having decided to say hello who do they talk to? We don't have a world leader that speaks for the whole planet. The UN? Forget it! The USA thinks they rule the world, Russia wants to, China intends to, the UK with Boris?

So we find ET, we communicate, we guarantee safe passage here, then what?
