There is no support in either the Quran or Hadith for the necessity of a caliphate, because Mohammed's task was basically purely spiritual leadership. The Prophet's political acts were solely conditioned by the specific circumstances of his time and there is therefore no reason to demand the maintenance of the caliphate.
