Rapid, easy Zika test developed

A new fast, easy and cheap "dipstick" test for the Zika and dengue viruses could revolutionize public health response to dangerous tropical germs, a new study reports.

The test accurately diagnoses Zika and dengue and can tell the two mosquito-borne viruses apart, an area in which commercially available tests now stumble, said senior researcher Lee Gehrke, a professor with the MIT Institute for Medical Engineering and Science.

"In light of the problems with Zika virus causing microcephaly [a genetic abnormality resulting in a smaller-than-normal head] and other defects in babies born to infected mothers, it's very important a pregnant woman would know if her fever is caused by Zika virus or dengue virus," said Gehrke, who's also a professor at Harvard Medical School.

Texas Woman Dies After Contracting Flesh-Eating Infection in Harvey Floodwaters

A Texas woman has died after she contracted a flesh-eating infection when she fell into Hurricane Harvey's floodwaters, officials say.

Nancy Reed, 77, died on Sept. 15 after falling in a flooded home earlier in the month in Houston's Kingwood neighborhood, the Harris County medical examiner said this week. She contracted necrotizing fasciitis, a skin infection that kills the body's soft tissue, through a wound she got from the fall, Houston Health Department spokesman Porfirio Villarreal said Thursday.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare disease caused by various types of bacteria, most commonly group A strep, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While infections from group A strep are generally mild, in the case of necrotizing fasciitis, the bacteria spread quickly and can become deadly in a short period of time without prompt treatment.

Flu Season 2017: CDC Reveals the Best Time to Get Your Shot

The days are getting shorter, the leaves are starting to turn color, and yesterday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched its annual influenza vaccine campaign, with Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price rolling up his sleeve to get the shot on stage. But pharmacies have already been advertising the shots for weeks in some neighborhoods. Why the discrepancy?

‘Black Death’ outbreak strikes Madagascar, killing 30 and triggering panic

Some might consider the plague a thing of the past, buried deep in medieval history. But it thrives in Madagascar, where the disease is a seasonal worry.

And this year, the country is experiencing what may be its deadliest outbreak in years: About 194 people are suspected to have fallen ill from the plague since August, and 30 people have died as of Tuesday, according to Madagascar's Ministry of Health. Experts say they can't remember the last time the death toll was so high. Last year, 63 people died over the course of the year, out of 275 cases.

As a result of the outbreak, Madagascar is temporarily shutting down its public institutions.

Fatal plague outbreak in Madagascar: Pneumonic plague has health officials scrambling

Officials are struggling to contain a widespread and deadly outbreak of the plague that’s been wreaking havoc in Madagascar since late August. At least 45 deaths have been attributed to the outbreak, with more than 385 confirmed cases reported in 27 out of the country’s 114 districts.

The outbreak is worrisome because a majority of the confirmed illnesses include cases of the pneumonic plague, which can be transmitted through the air when an infected person coughs, and is 100 percent fatal if left untreated.

Florida confirms 1st Zika infection from mosquito for 2017

Florida health officials are reporting the state's first case this year of the Zika virus transmitted by a mosquito.

Florida's Department of Health said Thursday a Manatee County couple traveled to Cuba, and one of them contracted Zika while on the Caribbean island and was bitten by a mosquito after returning home.

That mosquito then bit and transmitted the virus to the other partner. Officials wouldn't identify the sex of the couple, citing privacy laws.

Over 30,000 Published Studies Could Be Wrong Due to Contaminated Cells

Many of the standard research cell lines used to develop and test new treatments aren't what they are claimed to be because they were contaminated with other "immortal" cell lines. We will doubtless see a lot of fallout from this in the near future.

When you die you KNOW you're dead: Scientists discover the mind still works after the body shows no sign of life and reveal people have heard their own death announced by medics

Some report having seen light at the end of a tunnel, while others claim to have floated above their body, watching as medics save their lives.

But the reality of near-death experiences has always been debated.

Now scientists have discovered that a person's consciousness continues to work after the body has stopped showing signs of life – meaning they have awareness of their own death.

And there is evidence to suggest someone who has died may even hear their own death being announced by medics.

H7N9 Influenza Could Be The Next Big Flu Pandemic

As the weather gets colder, we start preparing for winter and what it has in store for us. Part of that preparation, for some of us, includes getting our annual flu shot to prevent any untimely delays in our productivity. For many of us, the flu is a common part of our lives that we deal with when it comes. For some others, it is a big problem that can lead to fatal consequences. What most of us do not consider is the potential for a flu season to become pandemic. Looking at pandemics and deadly flu strains of the past, scientists are using what we know to understand current flu viruses that can become huge threats around the world. One such threat is the H7N9 influenza virus, which scientists are observing with great interest to see if it can become a pandemic strain and how we can stop it from happening.

Massive recall of packaged vegetables gets even bigger as more stores pull products

The web of recalls connected to Mann Packing's nationwide listeria scare expanded when three more multi-state vegetable product recalls were announced late Sunday by the FDA.

Meijer, a Midwestern chain similar to Walmart (one of the food-selling chains affected in the recall), recalled almost 20 different store brand produce items from its 235 supercenters and grocery stores in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.

Another 20 products got yanked by Randalls, Tom Thumb and Albertson’s stores in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. All products are under the Ready. Chef. Go! brand of seafood meals in cooking bags that include possibly-tainted vegetables from Mann Packing. Triple B Corp. recalled seven CP Fresh products that the FDA notice states went to schools, hotels, hospitals and retail delis. Also, Triple B recalled eight Alaska Carrot brand products sold in Alaska’s retail stores.

Whole Foods recalled Veggie Power Blend, Sesame Chicken Power Salad, and Mexican Chicken Power Salad salads sold by the pound at 10 Northern California stores from Sept. 28 through Friday. Mann Packing is based in Salinas, a city just south of California’s Bay Area.

124 dead, nearly 1,200 infected with plague in Madagascar

(CNN)A plague outbreak in Madagascar has infected 1,192 people since August, with 124 deaths, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and Madagascar's National Bureau of Risk Management and Disaster reported on Monday.
The majority of cases, 67%, were the pneumonic form of the disease, which can spread from person to person.
Plague is caused by infection with the bacterium Yersinia pestis and is typically spread through the bite of infected fleas, frequently carried by rats, causing bubonic plague. Symptoms include painful, swollen lymph nodes, called bubos, as well as fever, chills and coughing.

Thanks for the recall notice, Gary.

Founder and Owner of Pharmaceutical Company Insys Arrested and Charged with Racketeering

BOSTON – The founder and majority owner of Insys Therapeutics Inc., was arrested today and charged with leading a nationwide conspiracy to profit by using bribes and fraud to cause the illegal distribution of a Fentanyl spray intended for cancer patients experiencing breakthrough pain.

John N. Kapoor, 74, of Phoenix, Ariz., a current member of the Board of Directors of Insys, was arrested this morning in Arizona and charged with RICO conspiracy, as well as other felonies, including conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and conspiracy to violate the Anti-Kickback Law. Kapoor, the former Executive Chairman of the Board and CEO of Insys, will appear in federal court in Phoenix today. He will appear in U.S. District Court in Boston at a later date.

The superseding indictment, unsealed today in Boston, also includes additional allegations against several former Insys executives and managers who were initially indicted in December 2016.

The superseding indictment charges that Kapoor; Michael L. Babich, 40, of Scottsdale, Ariz., former CEO and President of the company; Alec Burlakoff, 42, of Charlotte, N.C., former Vice President of Sales; Richard M. Simon, 46, of Seal Beach, Calif., former National Director of Sales; former Regional Sales Directors Sunrise Lee, 36, of Bryant City, Mich., and Joseph A. Rowan, 43, of Panama City, Fla.; and former Vice President of Managed Markets, Michael J. Gurry, 53, of Scottsdale, Ariz., conspired to bribe practitioners in various states, many of whom operated pain clinics, in order to get them to prescribe a fentanyl-based pain medication. The medication, called “Subsys,” is a powerful narcotic intended to treat cancer patients suffering intense breakthrough pain. In exchange for bribes and kickbacks, the practitioners wrote large numbers of prescriptions for the patients, most of whom were not diagnosed with cancer.

Superbug 'sleuthing' finds secret outbreaks

A feat of "genomic sleuthing" has uncovered 173 secret outbreaks of the superbug MRSA, a study shows.

They were found in the east of England over the course of just one year, according to the details published in Science Translational Medicine.

The researchers say their approach could transform the way we tackle MRSA and other superbugs.

Detecting outbreaks that are happening under our noses should cut the number of people infected.

Thanks Mr. Kevvy.

Why plague caught Madagascar unaware

Madagascar is facing the worst outbreak of plague in 50 years.

There have been more than 1,800 cases and 127 deaths since the start of August, according to new figures.

The island off the south-east coast of Africa is used to seeing about 400 cases of mostly bubonic plague in the same rural areas every year.

But this year it has developed into the deadlier pneumonic version and spread to much more populated areas, including the capital.

Madagascar plague: WHO in huge release of antibiotics

Madagascar country profile

The WHO describes the plague as "one of the oldest - and most feared - of all diseases".

Historically, plague has been responsible for widespread pandemics with extremely high numbers of deaths.

It was known as the Black Death during the 14th Century, killing more than 50 million people across Europe.

Deadly airborne plague in Madagascar is now at 'crisis' point and the 'worst outbreak in 50 years' as cases rocket by almost 40% in just 5 DAYS and could hit a further 20,000 in weeks

The World Health Organization now states there are 1,801 suspected cases
This is significantly higher than the 1,309 the agency reported last Thursday
Professor Robin May, an infectious diseases expert at Birmingham University, told MailOnline that the outbreak is 'concerning definitely'
Analysis of figures by MailOnline show the epidemic could strike a further 20,000 people in just a matter of weeks, if current trends continue
The 'unprecedented' outbreak has prompted warnings in 9 nearby countries

New 'Black Death' FOUND: Deadly virus WORSE than plague and with no CURE breaks out - WHO

A DEADLY outbreak of a rare and highly fatal virus has broken out in eastern Uganda and five cases have already been identified, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed.

The disease, known as Marburg virus disease (MVD), is similar to Ebola and can be lethal in up to 90 per cent of cases.

Emergency screening has begun at the Kenya-Uganda border in Turkana after three members of the same family died of the disease in Uganda.

The outbreak is thought to have started in September when a man in his 30s, who worked as a game hunter and lived near a cave with a heavy presence of bats, was admitted to a local health centre with a high fever, vomiting and diarrhoea.
