Look at Sirius using sky-map.org and you probably will be able to observe "their" antennae.

And not any "dishes" either.

BTW: Welcome to Seti@home, except for the possible spelling above.

Suggestions welcome.

Except for that, the possible gaussian versus intelligent signal translation, which I could have a little more about later on.

What would be the advantage of moving the web servers into space? Now I can see a definite advantage to moving the search antennae to the far side of the moon to totally eliminate stray signals from earth from the mix.

Ah, two problems there Bob. Firstly the antennas you speak of to collect signals are actually rather large dishes! We don't have the technology to build one up there, let alone land and set up something the size of a TV aerial. Secondly how would we get a signal back from the far side of the moon? You'd be talking some sort of orbiting satellites at the La Grange points or similar to pick up and re-direct the signals.

You could mount say a 6ft dish on the ISS, but would that be any better than Earth based dishes? And in any case it is not fixed, the ISS orbits the earth. Also the Moon rotates on its axis as well. Our best bet is to refine the algorithms to be better at weeding out RFI.

Remember, he is talking about 100 years from now. The problems you are referring to should be in the past by then.

The moon has been rotating on its axis for 4.53 billion years, and the earth on its axis for 4.54 billion years. I doubt that will change much in the next 100 years. Even in 2117, I doubt we would have the technology to build something like the GBT or Arecibo dish on the far side of the moon, permanently staff it, and get the signals back to Earth. Even now the Chinese only have modest proposals for a small moon base on the near side of the moon maybe by 2040 at the earliest.

Even if it was do-able, why would they bother anyway? For all we know we may have found ET by 2075, and no need to look any more. It's all conjecture and pie in the sky Bob.

If we stifle all imagination and out of the box thinking you are right, we will never get anywhere.
