You can always manually download updates from http://catalog.update.microsoft.com

In the case of the Kaby Lake and Ryzen CPUs also not, because these files are *.msu files, which are blocked. As I read elsewhere, it may be possible to manually add *.cab files via DISM, but that is very circuitous.

I have only ever downloaded the .exe packages from there.
I guess as long as there are other users that can provide the static path to the updates they could be downloaded by anyone.

To my knowledge to be able to download updates manually you have to know the update number starting with KB

You just type what you are looking for into the search box. Give this a try: Windows 7 Rollup 2017

Sorry for the double post in a row, but has it ever occurred to anyone that this latest M$ Creators Update has a rather, how can one put it, religious angle to it? Time was when M$ Windows used to evolve to meet users needs. I find their terminology disturbing.

As with every update, Microsoft has a number of new features and changes lined up, including many that "Insider Program" users have been testing already.

Way back we used to have Alpha and Beta testers, now we seem to have a secret Club. Again, disturbing.

If you have a look at your Windows Update page when it's on the screen- the option is there for you to join the Windows Insider Programme. They are the Beta testers, Alpha if you're game.
It's never been a "secret club".

I'd suggest waiting a while.
There have been a few issues reported regarding the Creator's Update- i'd suggest checking out the noise online to see if they're likely to affect you before upgrading.
I've got updates deferred so it should be a t least 6 weeks before I end up getting it. Time for them to sort the worst of the issues out.

Thanks Grant where do you suggest I check out the noise? There was a sound issue but that is simply fixed by reinstalling that sound the driver

Thanks Grant where do you suggest I check out the noise?

Doing a Google on "Creator's Update problems" brought up a few hits.
Just ignore the usual "Click here to fix computer problems" etc links in most of resulting web pages.

Nope.
From what I've been able to find there aren't any major wide spread issues, but depending on the system there are a couple of significant issues- running out of memory, unable to complete the update due to insufficient disk space (even though it is sufficient), no internet connection after the upgrade.
If you've got more than the minimum necessary RAM, plenty of free HDD space, and are able to reinstall your modem's drivers, then they're not likely to be a problem.

Personally, i'd rather wait a few weeks and let M$ sort out the more common/ higher impact issues than muck around with it myself.

I am thinking I will wait a little while. I have seen evidence that sometimes folder names disappear. Interesting I had heard about install problems but hadn't heard about not enough disk space

Actually they started that with Win7, after the Vista disaster... and that worked. What they are doing now is clearly worshipping at the shrine of 'Big Data', which according to the book 'The Seven Pillars of Statistical Wisdom' is folly. In this context I believe what they are doing, similar to the CIA/NSA, is guaranteeing their own demise.

Interesting that they are now opening it up to the general public, money saving exercise? Or, being cynical, trying to engender brand loyalty?

Or maybe they've heard about people complaining about a lack of testing and so are letting more people test things on more hardware and software combinations to reduce the number of issues when new software is rolled out?

M$ must be just about the most disreputable outfit on the face of the planet

So you haven't heard of Apple, Amazon, Comcast, Alibaba, Uber, VW etc, etc, etc?

Unofficial Windows 7/8.1 update workaround posted to GitHub

GitHub user Zeffy has created a patch that removes a limitation that Microsoft imposed on users of 7th generation processors, a limit that prevents users from receiving Windows updates if they still use Windows 7 and 8.1.

This limitation was delivered through Windows Update KB4012218 (March 2017 Patch Tuesday) and has made many owners of Intel Kaby Lake and AMD Bristol Ridge CPUs very angry last week, as they weren't able to install any Windows updates.

There is a link to the GitHub scripts in the article. Use at own risk. :^)

Caveat:

"The only downside of these solutions is you have to apply a new patch whenever wuaueng.dll gets updated," says Zeffy in his GitHub repo README. Fortunately, the entire task doesn't take long to complete.

Sounds like removing KB4012218 would be a better option.

Turning off updates is the option I picked.
