An overlay screen just notified me Microsoft wants to install "Creators Update". Is this a bad thing? The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

I now have 4 machines running with the Creators update and no problems. Of course if you do run the SETI screensaver, it currently does not work. The only failure I had was on my Windows tablet where it removed the sound drivers. so I just rolled it back. It is a known problem that MS are looking into. |

Trouble is that it IS a Wintel world out there and they know it. Basically they have us over a barrel, which of course was always their long term aim. I don't know about that. I have two legal copies of Win7 and I am using them, but I am trying to get third pc online and it is going to have Linux on it. And if I ever fix two other motherboards (got to replaces some caps), they will have Linux too since I don't have anymore legal copies of Win7. |

If one looks, there are still brand new copies of Win 7 Pro x64 floating around on ebay. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

You can still buy a new computer with Windows 7 installed as well. But watch out, because Microsoft is now actively blocking updates to Windows 7 and 8.1 installed on systems with new Ryzen and Kaby Lake CPUs. You'll get a popup explaining that the CPU does not support the operating system (bull) and that the only OS with full support is Windows 10. |

You can still buy a new computer with Windows 7 installed as well. This is what I found on http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/microsoft’s-april-security-update-blocks-windows-update-in-7-and-8-1-for-new-cpus.html, and the listed OEMs are https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/11675/windows-7-windows-8-1-skylake-systems-supported. I don't buy computers, I build them!! |

You can always manually download updates from http://catalog.update.microsoft.com In the case of the Kaby Lake and Ryzen CPUs also not, because these files are *.msu files, which are blocked. As I read elsewhere, it may be possible to manually add *.cab files via DISM, but that is very circuitous. |

The Creators Update just sounds so Biblical. Microsoft really has a god complex, don't they? ;~) Yes...they have tightened their grip and control over their faithful during the last 20 years to a level that rivals religion. Now they have more proven actual power than any god can boast. Humans may rule the world...but bacteria run it... |

Some years ago M$ were taken to court and forced to unbundle Internet Explorer to allow users to use their own choice of Browser. Chris, I never understood that, Windoz has never stopped me from using the browser of my choice, I just download what I want and ignore IE. |

But the default browser you start with is always Internet Explorer, or Edge in the case of Win10. You do not have a list of choices to start off with, only the Microsoft supplied one. Also, to get Windows to see the other browser as the default browser, you have to go through steps, else you'll always be bothered with the question if you want your other browser to be the default browser for that session, when it starts up. |

You can always manually download updates from http://catalog.update.microsoft.com I'm interested to see if doing updates via WSUS will get around all of that. I won't be able to find that out myself until I get a Ryzen system though, and that's going to be in late November at this point. I suspect the use of WSUS will be fine, but it also would not surprise me if they've figured out how to make that not work as well. If that's the case, then my current install looks like I'm just going to put it into sysprep mode and swap the mobo and CPU out and hope for the best.
