Actually the thread title is "New Phone Scam. Pretending to be a telemarketer from a resort." Both the Police and Microsoft has narrowed it down that MOST phone scams comes from Kalkota, India. Not from a resort. Some scammers are even using Swedish phone numbers from places like Tommelilla and Sorsele:) And here we don't call India a part of Far East. But then I live closer to India then you do. LOL. |

Actually, those of us with breeding refer to that area as the "Shores of far Cathay". Really? But I guess we are Far off topic. |

Actually this thread is about growing rutabaga in sandy soils. I just didn't want to tell anyone that. |

Rutabaga:) Yummie. AKA Swedes. Rutabaga is the common North American term for the plant. This comes from the old Swedish dialectal word rotabagge, from rot (root) + bagge (short, stumpy object; probably related to bag) |

[UPDATE:] No new calls from this scammer. No new Nomorobo blocks on them, either. I have been checking and rechecking my credit cards, (online), and my bank account; no unauthorized transactions, so I think I'm OK on this. :-) TL TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Be careful out there. The banks new wireless bank cards lack encryption and can be skimmed directly from your wallet, for example, with a free app on a regular smartphone. The same applies to many other unencrypted RFID chips. If you have a wallet in your back pocket, your cards can be skimmed by someone holding his/her cell phone against your back pocket when you get stuck in a crowded place. They can also use some larger equipment and an antenna large like a book and associated battery attached to a reader, for example, placed in a backpack or a shoulder bag, to skim cards at several meters. Then they just go online and use the online purchase information online. |

[UPDATE:] It could come many months from now as your data might still be packaged and sold online to a bidder who will attempt to use it. One thing you can do for your cards is to request new cards with new numbers. That makes it much harder for them to hit you. Think of it as resetting your password every so often. If you do this you need to reset any reoccurring charges to the new credit card number. Also you need to think if you are going to need to use the card while you wait the week for them to mail you the new one. Good luck, we all will need it sooner or later. |

[UPDATE:] I think you were being overly paranoid in this case. You never gave them a credit card number, so what's the problem? David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

[UPDATE:] Well, because I was originally informed that when this call came through that "They" already had your credit card info; "They" were trying to tape a "Yes" from you to be able to authorize charges. If this is NOT the case, then yes, you are right - I did NOT give any CC information out to anyone. TL TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

Foil works but RFID cards are rare and being discountinued. Here is an update on the tech. Slate The Skimming Scam |

[UPDATE:] Not this incident; but, prior ID Theft hacks, (Anthem Blue Cross, Chase Bank, and my Primary Care Physician's office being broken into), have forced me in the recent past to replace my cards to get new card numbers. The latest hack/theft was when on last 4th of July weekend, my PCP's office was broken into and records were stolen. Also stolen were payment choice processes, (check, ATM Debit, or credit card), so in this instance I had to replace my ATM Debit Card ONLY. I never wrote personal checks to my doctors; instead, I'd use Chase Online Bill Pay. Through Chase, ANY Payee that does NOT accept Electronic Payment is sent a Chase Bank Draft, (but, NOT a personal check from my checkbook), that does deduct funds from my checking account and that Bank Draft is then cashed by my doctors. While the Bank Draft does have a routing number and is linked for that one instance to my checking account, the Bank Draft does NOT include my Checking Account Number, NOR regular Routing Number... As pointed out by David, since this latest Scam did NOT get any CC Numbers from me, most likely they will be unable to charge anything to my current list of cards, NOR ATM card. However; IF as was originally passed on to me about this Resort Scam that they already have CC and ATM and Banking info on me, I MUST and WILL keep vigilant and monitor my cards and bank account closely for the next few months for any fraudulent transactions. <<----- STILL a paranoid bastard!!! ;-) YMMV TL [EDIT:] Oh, and with the Chase Bank hack, I implemented security measures of requiring Chase to ask for TWO IDs in bank, AND implemented a Password for ALL in bank and Customer Service Phone Transactions with Chase. I also choose to NO LONGER use ANY ATMs. However; occasionally do make use of store card readers with my ATM Card; like grocery shopping... TL TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Also, wanted to add that from the Anthem hack, I have a continuing Credit Monitoring Program; and from my PCP's Office I now have LifeLock. Can't be too careful these days. TL TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

but I only use the ones physically inside a bank branch. There is only so much you can sensibly do, else you get frightened to get out of bed, or go out of your front door. How do you enter a bank without a card that most likely have a RFID tag? |

in the UK it was commonplace for years for Old Age Pensioners (OAP's) to collect their weekly pension in cash from the local Post Office I just read this and I had thought you may be surprised to find that my father goes to the local Post Office every Monday at 9am (well except on Bank Holidays) and collects his pension in cash. Of course he does have to put a card in a reader and type in a pin, but the Post Office has bank accounts now. His pension is transferred to the Post Office account each Monday, hence why we go then. He has been collecting his pension for 27 years so was one who didn't wish to change. There are a lot of younger pensioners that appear to do the same. His weekly pension more that covers his weekly expenses, so he puts the excess in his bedside drawer (not under the mattress) Then every couple of months I help him count the money and then pay it into his actual bank account. Complicated, yes but it is how he has been doing things for years. |

What? This is the Isle of Wight, about 20 years behind the mainland. As to terrorist, the local Womens Institute would be horrified at the suggestion (probably a UK joke) |
