On the issue of Russian saw on the news today a story about Kaspersky total security. Kaspersky is a Russian company. The story suggested that it could be a Russian government plot to infiltrate US computers. So how many of us have used Kaspersky anti-virus? Has this been a scam all along?

Those evil Russians hey.

I recently had an incident where I was asked to re-sign a data-share form as the service had just put our private data into an online system.

I refused to sign unless the organisation was able to tell me whether the data transmitted would not be bounced outside of the UK.

As is the nature of the internet it is quite easy for our packets of data to be routed and bounced outside of our national juristictions.

By doing so it breaks our local data protection laws as our privacy becomes vunerable.

This is extreemly true if data is passed through any US server given the Patriot Act and the US's anti PGP stance. (US government insistance on it's right to unpack individuals information.)

Take a look at Microsoft. They jumped on the Android band waggon with Windows 10. Operating systems that openly allow the silent uploading of private data.

Evil snoopers everywhere ;-)~

Carlos, that is one of the urban myths and conspiracy theories going the rounds that has no foundation in truth.

Kaspersky Lab is a Russian multinational cybersecurity and anti-virus provider headquartered in Moscow, Russia and operated by a holding company in the United Kingdom. Kaspersky Lab ranks fourth in the global ranking of antivirus vendors by revenue.

The Kaspersky Global Research and Analysis Team (GReAT) has discovered sophisticated espionage platforms such as Equation Group and the Stuxnet worm. Various covert government-sponsored cyber-espionage efforts were uncovered through their research. Kaspersky also publishes the annual Global IT Security Risks Survey. As of 2014, Kaspersky's research hubs analyze more than 350,000 malware samples per day.
I don't use it myself as I prefer the free ones rather than paying for it.

Open a Barclay's a/c, you can then get it free.
But I don't use it, not the friendliest program to use.

Just got a call from a male robovoice that tried to tell me it was my fault I hadn't done anything when the factory warranty on my car expired (2-3 years ago). It said "Hello?" when I didn't respond. Finally, it asked if I wanted to hear my options. I said "I want you to f--- off." It hung up.

Currently, a ransomware campaign is in full swing in a number of countries.
In this case, there is a new variant of WannaCry (also known as Wcry or WanaCrypt0r) that infects Windows systems and encrypts files locally and on shared network sites.
The initial vector is not fixed at the time of writing. However, this version of WannaCry has, according to CCN-CERT [1], functionality for spreading and infecting other network-connected systems through a vulnerability in the SMB protocol. The vulnerability in question was corrected by Microsoft on 14/3 [2] and it has appeared a few days ago using code that exploits vulnerability.
This means that WannaCry can potentially spread rapidly on a network of vulnerable networked computers. It is important that fixes for MS17-010 [2] be installed as soon as possible.

https://www.cert.se/2017/05/pagaende-ransomware-kampanj-wannacry-wcry-wannacrypt0r
According to the BBC, there are reports of attacks in, among others, China, the United States, Britain, Russia, Spain, Italy, Vietnam and Taiwan. Security experts believe there is a connection.

Even in Sweden, ransomware rages.

Here's a polite request - stop "nitpicking" - you don't like it.

What has several of your posts got to do with telemarketers?

Actually that link is to just one type of scam call that purports to be officially from Microsoft. Scam calls of all kinds come from many different places, as I stated the Far East (includes India) and Eastern Europe. The title of this thread is about tele-marketeers.

See how easy it is to slip up?

The thread was Phone Scams & your posts are relevant in that respect.

Less rush to boost post count & more thinking.

I got a call a little while ago that I think was the same MO as Scott's original post, but with different details. The voice sounded the same, though. BUT, there was a clever new twist.

It purported to be from my area code and prefix. She said she was selling home security systems and asked if I was a homeowner in need of one. I asked if she was a real person. Suddenly, there was "room presence" on the line and her voice was a bit more distant. "Hahaha! Yes, I'm a real live operator! I guess it's because I'm assisted in the beginning by an automated system. Now," and the presence disappeared and the same recording as before asked if I was a homeowner. Before I could say anything, though, she decided I'd said no and said okay, goodbye, and hung up on me.

There must be someone listening to the failures and devising ways to handle them. I wonder what would have happened if I'd said I was a homeowner but I already had a security system.

Actually if you have a good product in the first place you hardly need customer services.

To suggest we need good customer services as an aspect of very good marketing probably means we sell cruddy products and need to advertise hard and appoliogise long.

If we are interested in win win. We transact the right quality needed item for the right price.

We should rarely need customer services.

You all do non-sequiters...

To have a busy customer services dept is not a badge of honour. It's a badge about how useless your items are...

Or about how useless your customers are :-)~

A very long time ago in The Wizard of Id, the Duke was visiting the new wagon dealer. The salesman said "We have the largest service department around." The Duke turned and walked away. The salesman asked where he was going. "I prefer a wagon that needs a much smaller service department."

SVT News tries to call one of the calls from Somalia that several people received. We came to an audio box reading in English.
The mysterious calls from Somalia that many in Sweden have been called upon are quickly blocked, but SVT News managed to come up with one of them.

I got the "This is the IRS Internal Revenue Service. We are about to sue you" call yesterday. Several times. I finally set the phone to block the number.

I'm pretty sure IRS never phone you.
Instead they send you a letter saying "Please call us".
Weird if someone go for that scam.
