Thanks Monday for correcting it.

Tangle with that one will make for a bad hair day. LOL

Yep. I used to have nightmares about those things when I was a kid after seeing one in a scary movie. Cant remember what the movie was though.

My critter's nose and ears aren't that big, and his feet don't have big claws like that. I think he's a groundhog. I know his tail looks suspiciously beaver-like in the photo, but I've spotted him closer up, and it's just a dark bushy tail.

No, you folks "down under" just have some of the most deadly creatures on the planet, that's all...

Peanut appears to have weaned her babies and the group has split up. This is normal and natural for this time of year.

I miss my little troop of babies. This was a very fun litter and while I may still see an occasional baby in the backyard from time to time, I know that my backyard will be the subject of several territorial disputes before some mama raccoon, perhaps Peanut again, somehow marks it as (mostly) her own next year.

My neighbor (across the street) has had two chickens that he doesn't didn't pay much attention to. I have no idea what he was feeding them or if he was feeding them. One day I gave them a treat - some dried mealworms that I had for feeding wild birds. Ever since then the chickens have been spending a lot of time in my yard. The more time they spent here, the more inclined I was to give them something to eat. (Didn't want them to go hungry.) I gave them wild bird seed and, occasionally, a piece of white bread. Then they discovered the dry cat food I put on the front porch to feed the feral cats. (Had to stop putting cat food out until after dark.)

Now I wake up and they are in my front yard. Eventually they come into my back yard. I've gone out and bought proper chicken food for them, which isn't much different than the wild bird food. I have no idea when the last time was that they went back across the street to their home.

I have adopted them. I have named them Thelma and Louise. I sent a text to my neighbor asking if he'd like to sell them. He clearly has little or no invested time or effort in having or raising chickens. I haven't heard back. I get a little "do not disturb" moon symbol when I send him a text, so I suppose he's not even getting them. (I don't know how or why a text would have that moon symbol, so I'm assuming.)

The whole reason for this post is to explain the photos I'll be posting in a few seconds to the Photographs by Setizens thread. And if you have advice, feel free to share it. "How to cook the chickens" advice is not wanted. I'm sure there are those of you who want to be funny, but I've already heard it. Thanks anyway! ;-)

Really, I don't know why I'm posting in both places. Just seems like the right thing to do at this time.

Nice looking birds but my advice is do not try to make house pets out of them, that would be a very bad idea. Just a thought.

Not house pets. Yard pets.

Wiki says:
The Rhode Island Red was developed as dual-purpose breed, to provide both meat and eggs. Since about 1940, it has been selectively bred predominantly for egg-laying qualities, and the modern industrial Rhode Island Red is a layer breed. Rhode Island Reds have been used in the creation of many modern hybrid breeds, mainly due to the prolific egg laying abilities of the Rhode Island Red.[citation needed]

The traditional dual-purpose "old-type" Rhode Island Red lays 200–300 brown eggs per year, and yields rich-flavored meat suitable for making chicken stew

What are you doing with all those eggs?

Need some custard recipes? Eric loves vanilla custard for breakfast, and since it is basically milk and eggs with a little sugar, I figure it is better for him than donuts for breakfast.
