Interesting article. Thanks, Gordon. I owe the squirrels in my backyard an apology for making fun of them for stashing peanuts under a rhubarb leaf and thinking the nuts were properly buried. It seems that my backyard squirrels are veritable Rhodes Scholars compared to this little fellow... Enjoy! Squirrel tries to hide a hazelnut in a dog's fur |

I've been feeding the squirrels for years here. They love to bury anything and everything in my yard. My yard looked like I had it aerated. I found that shelled cracked/crushed sunflower seeds are eaten on the spot and not buried. Whole sunflower seeds they will bury. Anything bigger they will bury. What a riot the first few times I fed them brazil nuts. They were not quite sure what to do with them. har ... |

I've never tried brazil nuts. Were the squirrels able to eat them? |

I've only used shelled brazil nuts so that part was not a problem. If they are hungry they sit there and eat the whole thing. Part of the point is to watch them. Most times they eat half and bury the rest. I'll try and take a photo of one after grubbing in my yard all day. They have this dirt/grub line, much like a mask just below their eyes. Like a raccoon's mask has slipped down. [forgot] Brazil nuts do not have a whole lot of favor for me. Rather plain and bland. Part reason squirrels get them. har ... |

No way that a squirrel can crack a brazil nut. Even we humans have problem to crack them. But when cracked squirrels like them very much. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5YdSmtzhbE Oh. Don't put a squirrel in a box:) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vW3jB3fFq4M |

They have this dirt/grub line, much like a mask just below their eyes. Like a raccoon's mask has slipped down. Not the best in the morning but you can see the beginnings of a grub line. Their whole muzzle will be dark by end of day. ... |
