I wonder why the 3 GB version of the 1060 GPU is higher in the Top GPU models even though it has it has less cores,

Do you think this is because of more powerful Rigs would have been installing the 3GB since it was released earlier? or is there an actual spec deference between the cards,

Do you think the 6GB will slowly move up the ranking to be similar to the 3 GB.

cheers

For gaming you are better off getting the 6GB version, but for just crunching here 3GB is all you need.

Take a look at my 2 rigs with dual 3GB 1060's. ;-)

Cheers.

There is a slight difference between the 3GB and 6GB cards. In that the 3GB ones have 1152 cores and the 6GB have 1280 cores.

I would expect the higher performance number for the 3GB cards would more likely be that there are more factory OC'd versions of them running .

Yes, I suppose OC cards will be running faster stock frequencies.

my aim was going to buy 1 or 2 used 980 or 980Ti for my new rig but I am now being slowly coming around to with the latest NVidia 10X0, they appear to be more suited to number crunching. with less power. My motherboard can take 4 GPU cards, but I was going to start with a couple first and then see where I go after that.

I had a look at your 2x 1060, so about 20K average RAC per GPU. Good to see what I can expect from them thanks.

It's more around the 18-19K range while GBT work is flowing, but if you are going to run 4 of them then be very careful with what you get as a lot take up 2.1 to 2.2 slots now.

My ASUS DUAL-GTX1060-O3G's are of a 2.1 design so they won't suit you, but my Gainward GeForce GTX 1060 3GB's would (the reason that I bought them for that rig is so I can add a 3rd to it).

Cheers.

Thanks for the update.

I will keep the sizing in mind.

In theory my motherboards should take 4 double width cards, it's a GA-X99-SOC-Champion, but I don't see any need to go over 3 TBH, 4 might be tight or impossible anyway.

Haha

Don't worry already thought of that.
I Bought a good 750 Wall PSU which should be fine for up to up to 3 GPUs up to 1080 but I know, if I went the GTX 970 route that would draw more power and a bit of a squeeze.

I don't mind adding a bigger PSU down the line anyway, but I am currently trying stay sensible. lol

cheers for the help.
