Unfortunately, the violence is now on-topic...

St. Louis police are saying they no longer consider a protest at a downtown intersection peaceful and they’re asking that demonstrators leave the area.

Protesters had surrounded a police vehicle in front of the old police building near Tucker Boulevard and Clark Avenue and were damaging it with rocks. Police approached and tried to secure the vehicle and protesters threw rocks and pieces of curbing at them. Police then used pepper spray on the protesters.

In a tweet, the police department said the protesters were ignoring commands and violating the law and were subject to arrest.

Most people do not understanding that most Police Departments and their Officer's. Don't care about the 'issue' or ideology behind violent demonstrations.

That may be the most intelligent thing you have said this year. You're on a roll.

The overwhelming majority of police officers (at least in the U.S. and Canada) are indeed good people, won't get into legal trouble through the course of their duties, peacefully resolve conflicts where possible, use only the minimal amount of force required to protect life, property and uphold the law, protect others sometimes at risk to their own lives, and are exemplary citizens. This is not the problem.

A small minority of police officers (as with every other group) are violent, bigoted, corrupt, dishonest, or a combination of all four. Ideally they will be caught at it and fired and/or prosecuted, so... this is not the problem.

Some bizarre ethical mutation causes the overwhelming majority, as well as the judicial/legal system, to protect the small minority from the consequences of their actions. This is the problem.

Not a report about individual police officers, but an interesting one nonetheless.

Are US police too quick to shoot?

Considering the hundreds, if not more immediate life threatening situations police encounter across the country every week.

Say the same about the unarmed officers in all the countries that do not have routine police armed. The result of these unarmed police forces is a much lower level of violence and crime. Bullies create violence. Just like armed brown shirt thugs and Kristallnacht.

Yeah, it's a real good thing cops have deadly force on their side so they don't have to analyze a situation and deal with it appropiately and accordingly, ignoring what bystanders are screaming at them while they resort to upholding the law.

(And by the way, I subscribe to Mr. Kevvy's statements that most cops are good.)

"Grain of" is your description of your cited URL.

Personal insults when your opinion is shown to be incorrect. Is your SOP.

I saw no insult just a logical question.

One of the strongly contributing factors to this is a militarization of the police, where they are being given stronger and stronger lethal weapons and unfortunately their training reflects this. (I was utterly flabbergasted even at the concept of police bayonets, one of the military weapons formerly prohibited for police forces yet somehow now allowed...)
Thus when there is a bad situation requiring a fast assessment, that assessment is immediately going to be directed to the firearm and shooting centre of mass or other lethal response, rather than towards the most effective non-lethal solution available and minimal force required to solve the problem.

For example, a person with a possible mental issue armed with a simple blunt object ie a hammer or pipe could be rendered ineffective by an officer in riot gear with a riot shield... this gear makes one impervious to such a weapon. This is standard-issue kit... why aren't police putting it on to confront people in these situations so they don't have to pull their sidearm? ie pin them with the shield while whacking them with a truncheon if required and then other officers can restrain them for good. Also works wonders against tiny pocket knives or screwdrivers or other barely-lethal weapons that so many people have been shot dead over.

As an example of the contrast between police training in Europe and North America, we have the incident of unarmed Swedish police officers on vacation who non-violently subdued people fighting on the New York subway. Their training includes how to non-violently restrain violent suspects, etc., and emphasis on de-escalation. This is pretty much standard in European police forces.

Your example has three or four LEO subduing one unarmed violent person that was not advancing on them.

That is a little different than one or two LEO dealing with an advancing armed/unarmed? violent person.

Mr. Kevvy, I agree completely. The rules for US police forces seem better suited for Bodie than today. Stare decisis is the problem. Rules set in the 1800's are still the rule today. The pitchforks are starting to come out.

Just ask yourself, would this have happened in any European country?

This silly idea that a police officer is allowed to open fire any time a member of the public doesn't do what the officer thinks is the normal reaction, needs to be stopped.

Opening fire should be the last remaining option, not one of the first.
