From reading the story, this does not appear to be a case of the Police Officer acting improperly, but instead is a case of a very nasty trend in the Law...

Civil Asset Forfeiture.

You are correct. "Legal" Robbery.

Don't blame me, I voted for Johnson(L) in 2016.

Truth is dangerous... especially when it challenges those in power.

Due process does not apply to the war on crime, that includes street vendors and other misdemeanors. Shurely a minor speeding ticket should result in the car being confiscated.

doo doo process permits this. IIRC it started with seizing pirate ships on the high seas. As is frequently the case, what starts as a good intentioned limited measure becomes an unstoppable terror. Speaking of confiscating cars, they do that to john's who solicit the undercover officer. It has just become another "tax" the government imposes selectively on some persons.

https://mynewsla.com/crime/2017/09/14/lasd-deputy-arrested-for-allegedly-raping-two-inmates-on-the-same-day/
A 10-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was arrested for allegedly having sexual contact with two female inmates in a Lynwood jail, Sheriff Jim McDonnell announced Thursday.

Deputy Giancarlo Scotti, 31, was arrested around 6 p.m. Wednesday, hours after the alleged early morning assaults at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, McDonnell said.

Scotti was arrested while on duty and booked in Norwalk on suspicion of two counts each of rape under color of authority and oral copulation under color of authority, then released on $100,000 bond, the sheriff said.

Unfortunately, this is one cop who will not feel the full force of the law...

This seems to be a very bad verdict, and unfortunately the reporting/stories I have seen on it are sloppy as they all seem to miss some of the important details; one needs to read several articles to get them all.

  • (Yes, another black suspect shot by a white police officer...)
  • The officer told his partner he was "going to kill this motherf‑‑‑er, don't you know it" while they were in pursuit, ie not in a firefight attempting to intimidate the suspect.
  • The officer was carrying an AK-47 pistol at the time as well as his service pistol, completely against policy as he had not authorization to have it (this is why he was able to be fired before being found guilty.)
  • His partner did not even unholster his weapon, so clearly did not feel threatened.
  • The officer's DNA was found on the "suspect's" pistol, yet the suspect's was not; it is strongly suspected it was planted and was not seen in any of the surveillance videos entered into evidence.
  • Even with the above he was found not guilty (bench not jury trial) and the judge's ruling was that the "going to kill..." statement in the previous point was "ambiguous" and did not constitute an intention of the officer to kill the suspect.

So there are already protests starting in St. Louis and they may end up turning violent as night falls (ie, another Ferguson.) Let's hope the cooler heads prevail.

So not much faith in forensics then.

"Judge Timothy Wilson, the circuit judge who heard the case in a bench trial, acquitted Stockley on the murder charge as well as a charge of armed criminal action in a 30-page order released Friday morning."

What? No jury? Or just another case of sloppy reporting?

In U.S. state courts, the defendant has the right to waive their right to a jury verdict and instead have a verdict rendered by the judge. (This right isn't absolute in federal courts.) We have the same here as well. Given his situation I am not surprised he used it, and it seems to have paid off.

That's the problem. There will probably be, if there is rioting. Theft and destruction of innocent persons property. In addition to innocent persons losing their jobs, if innocent businesses are destroyed.
Not forgetting the fact that an innocent person was murdered by a cop.

I ask the following question:

Are you excusing crime against innocents. Because another crime was committed against an innocent?

No moral or ethical would.

How on earth did you come up with that, your question is totally unrelated to Sirius's post.

Bah... I should not have added that line as things are getting off-topic. So far a few protestors threw rocks and bottles but that was quickly quelled, five were pepper-sprayed. Otherwise no violence or damage.

I would ask that we wait until it hopefully doesn't happen before excess speculation. :^p

In a way it is to people like Clyde.

Innocent persons to them is not an indivdual but a whole community/nation & that community/nation must be protected at all times from the criminals/terrorists/madmen.

Ask an engineer just how many cogs on a gearwheel must be broken before an engine begins to slow/stop.

I am trying to follow your reasoning. To me your response is as as related to his as me asking you when did you quit beating your wife?
