"they now have a thriving advanced economy" We believe no one really knows for sure what is going on in North Korea, but we can at least try to understand the possibilities. Similarly, anyone who professes certainty should be viewed with the greatest skepticism. http://www.38north.org/about I do... ... |

Thought the US police officer was going to go home. Guess that was another campaign lie, like lying Hil..., er, tRump. http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/09/rise-trump-north-korea-comments-170919172721028.html US President Donald Trump's highly-combative remarks against North Korea and its leader at the United Nations will only harden Pyongyang's resolve to continue developing its nuclear programme, analysts have warned. |

If it wasn't so serious this situation would remind me of the old Warner Bros. cartoons with Foghorn Leghorn holding off at bay the tiny chicken hawk, with the rooster saying "whoa boy lets bury the hatchet but not in someone's head". Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

The quicker we stop his ability to murder and enslave more innocent millions. Understanding it is the lesser of evils. The better. So the possible millions of dead by doing so escape you? |

If Trump tones down his speech the Chinese would step in. As it is, not only is he engaging with a madman, he's irking both China & Russia. Stepping back, would enable both those countries to put more pressure on the madman to step back. I don't think any madman would want 3 powerful countries lining up against him. Your problem as seen on this board at least, is that any possible "sensible" solution offered, you see as appeasement. So you get rid of Kim, What then? Haven't you consistently stated over the years that history repeats itself? Don't you think the opportunity to break that cycle is more preferably? Just think of all those billions of dead & enslaved you've prevented & freed! |

The news of the Chinese President directing Chinese banks to comply with the new Executive Order regarding financing or facilitating the DPRK path to Nuclear suicide is a promising development but only time will tell if anything is actually curtailed. Also will the DepTres have the balls to come down on any Chinese bank/business ignoring the order. Stopping the 'gray channel' of support is another matter which also must be dealt with but is a many headed hydra difficult to kill. As the atmospheric detonation of a Nuclear device is prohibited by UN Resolution it will be 'interesting' to see the reaction of that body should Dead 'Rocket Man' Walking carry out his threat to do so. But(I am VERY SORRY to say) unless I miss my guess most of the infrastructure of the DPRK will cease to exist before there is time for that reaction. That is why a NoKo NoFly zone is good policy. Prevent the detonation and millions of Korean lives(No and So) would be saved. Allow the detonation and all bets are off. "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

Clyde, I agree with Sirius that it's more productive to propose your own idea of what to do than just contradict those of others. What would you do about this situation? Here is what I would do if I was in control: Reiterate that the U.S. does not want a war (ever) but any actual attack by NK would result in its destruction; the U.S. must uphold its commitments to its allies or they are worthless. Hard sanctions on NK reiterating that these are in place only to force them to the negotiating table. Sanctions on any nation that still does business with NK. Once NK enters into negotiation, NK must give up and dismantle its nuclear program and this must be confirmed and monitored by the UN closely. In return for this, the U.S. and its allies commit to not violate NK national sovereignty. Unlike Iraq which had no ally willing to assist, China has already said it has NK's back if it is attacked first so would be able to enforce this commitment; NK may accept it. What is your proposal? |

What do we do to stop Maniac Kim?Try to reduce the provocation on both side perhaps? @ Clyde: *WE* don't stop Kim. He can stop himself, or the people of the DPRK can stop him (as in Kim's head on a pike). @ Sirus B: Sigh... When are the people of Europe gonna learn.... Appeasement does NOT work. Didn't you learn this from Chamberlain's Munich agreement? Give a insane dictator what they demand, and it changes/stops nothing. And if Kim is damn fool enough to put a h-bomb onto an ICBM and launch it as a test... An atmospheric detonation of an H-Bomb. After all of Kim's threats to nuke us, that would lead to Götterdämmerung/Ragnarøkk... Twilight/Death of the Gods... (Insert... Rotate... Destruction of the world...) https://youtu.be/iY57ErBkFFE #Texit Don't blame me, I voted for Johnson(L) in 2016. Truth is dangerous... especially when it challenges those in power. |

Once NK enters into negotiation, NK must give up and dismantle its nuclear program and this must be confirmed and monitored by the UN closely. Respectfully Mr K, I do not believe the DPRK will agree to ever give up it's Nuclear ambitions regardless of who "has their back", as long as Kim is in power. That is the one factor to the equation that must be eliminated for intelligent reasoning to occur. I don't think anyone would seriously question the statement that Kim is deranged. There is the problem. "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

Whoa there boy. 1st off what does Europe have to do about an individual human being offering a sensible solution without it seen as appeasement? With what I proposed was the US toning down it's attitude. Let Ping Pong II continue rattling his mouth & weapoary. Let the US stand by & watch him continue to the point he P's off both China & Russia. Then All 3 (US, China & Russia) can let rip at the UN. If Ping Pong II then starts anything, the US is free to kick his ass & the world will not end up facing WWIII. That is much more preferable than the potential holocaust that lies ahead. TBH, those that see that "possible" solution as appeasement makes me wonder if their arnaments industries are running out of profits! |

That is the one factor to the equation that must be eliminated for intelligent reasoning to occur. You may be correct, but I still think it would be worthwhile at least to get to the stage where this can be proposed. especially if China commits to protecting NK sovereignty. They are the only nation that seems to have any sway with the Kim regime thus far. |

Would China secretly allow and perhaps wish that?Agents and Agencies of the Government of the United States are prohibited by statute from removing a 'foreign head of state' no matter how heinous. I don't think there are such restrictions on Chinese operations.....................just 'say'n........... "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

it would be worthwhile at least to get to the stage where this can be proposed. especially if China commits to protecting NK sovereignty. That stage has been reached several times in the last 25 years. China has repeatedly 'Guaranteed the sovereignty' of the DPRK repeatedly (in fact that's exactly what occurred in 1952). The result has been either DPRK walking away from the table or in the case of the Clinton agreement in the 1990's violating the agreement. Trump is correct in that respect, the time for empty talk and promises are over.........either dismantle and cease testing or risk total destruction...............period. Sigh. Regime change. Every time the USA does that what replaces it is worse. Yet they scream for another dose. Can you imagine what is going to be worse than Kim? They must judge and someone must be found wanting. Just like the ministry for the prevention of vice and the promotion of virtue, but they aren't using horse whips they are using nukes. They didn't see it to be a tantrum. You ignore a tantrum and it stops. Pay it attention and you have lost! That's where they have already put the USA, where it can only lose. Sigh. Get it over with, do the peace and surrender to Kim, and get the hell out of Korea and leave it to the Koreans. |
