Message 1889866 - Posted: 15 Sep 2017, 3:10:14 UTC - in response to Message 1889859.

I am writing the following with extreme dread. The longer we wait...

Much bluster less substance, NK will not cut it's own throat, MAD is not possible from them, some major damage but they don't have the resources.

Will China and Russia stay neutral if Japan(rather than the USA), initiates a preemptive strike?

How long until a NoKo toy falls short onto the island nation?

I advocate the initiation of a 'intercept all launches' policy. That will bleed his resources and demonstrate defense capability and resolve.

Give him lots of tests to perfect his active anti-anti missile electronic counter measures.

So sorry, the US government doesn't write contracts that way. We have what we have until the $1B contract is given to upgrade block III to block IV.

+1

It's the resources thing that matters. The US destroyed the Soviet economy by spending so much GDP on weaponry(made possible by a Capitalist system) that made it impossible for the Soviets to match without starving the populace(a result of the Socialist system) and starting another Revolution(which 'kinda happened' anyway).

How much treasure can NoKo continue to sink into intercepted missile launches and if it pushes Pilsberry Dough Boy to act 'in an unfortunate manner', better sooner than later.

And before the 'gang of three' chime in that other money is supporting NoKo............SO WHAT? How long will anyone continue feeding a mad dog before becoming fearful of being bitten.

Again I think "A No Fly Altitude and Trajectory Zone" should be declared:
70,000 feet and Ballistic Trajectory in Any Direction results in an interception. Period no questions.

Why believe Kim is different from other insane humans, who have also "cut their own throats"?

Answer: No reason to believe that.

The reason is for the NK regime to stay in power and exist.

Except in the DPRK that revolution, when Kim's dad starved them, didn't happen and they now have a thriving advanced economy totally dedicated to destroying the bully USA.

Betreger,

Ahh... but your supposition implies sanity on the part of the DPRK government. Evidence (their actions) suggests otherwise. Clyde still has a VERY valid point. Other (previous) dictators worldwide have demonstrated insanity. For instance, Hitler (WWII Germany). Hitler was VERY close to having the UK BEATEN, despite a lot of help from us (lend/lease, etc). But instead of finishing the job with the UK first, he goes and attacks his ally the USSR, opening a second front. If he had put off the USSR until after he had invaded and secured the almost beaten UK, he might have won.

DON'T count on sanity on the part of the DPRK preventing war, especially in light of the following:

1. The DPRK has badly frightened the government of Japan with the DPRK's nuclear and missile tests (especially the last 2 missile tests flying right over Japan and the last nuclear test being in the yield range of 100 kilotons -- 5 times bigger than the larger of the two nukes we dropped on Japan to end WWII).

2. The DPRK government has repeatedly threatened the RoK, Japan, and the USA with nuclear attack... enough to cause some amount of fear. Remember, not only is Japan seriously considering violating its Constitution and developing/deploying an offensive military capacity over this, but also some members of the RoK government have recently been asking us for some nukes -- with good reason.

3. Dictators have an infamous penchant for doing insane, stupid s***. Why should Kim III be any different.

*IF* Kim were 'sane', and he wanted to stay in power and continue to exist, he might do something like the following:

1. Stop and abandon, under international supervision, his nuclear weapons (and chemical weapons and biological weapons) program(s).

2. Enter into negotiations and agree to and sign a peace treaty to finally end the Korean War his grandfather started (with Stalin's blessings). Recognize the RoK's right to exist under the current borders.

3. Open up his nation to the world and stop being quite so isolationist. Join the community of nations as a peaceful, non-rogue nation.

4. Take a page from what the PRC (his neighbor) did. Allow modest market reforms of a vaguely capitalist sort.

5. I'm told that the DPRK has goods for export (Coal, Textiles, etc.). Sell them on the world market.

6. Use some of the proceeds from #5 to buy/import food to, I don't know, KEEP HIS PEOPLE from starving. Use more of it to build infrastructure to increase the DPRK's agricultural / industrial capacity. If Kim wishes to skim some of it into his own private coffers... whatever -- that is up to him and the people of the DPRK. After all, the practice is not unheard of in the rest of the world.

Thats all. What a SANE leader would do.

@ Kim Jong-un, leader of the DPRK:

A well-fed, happy people living in peace. Who knows, Kim... You do things right, you (and your DPRK army General staff) would get to be fabulously wealthy, and get to die of old age/natural causes.

Keep going the way you are going, Kim, and you will be ruling over dead people surrounded by many more dead people, and you will have a missile hit you in the backside one day when you go to the bathroom.

Better a sane living person, than an insane dead person.

Major, you fail to understand the eastern mind. The last country to give up its weapons was Iraq. The USA did what to its leader? What part of a sane mind would ever start down a path to have a repeat?

Despite the usual echo chamber of dissent (__o__), I agree with Major Kong 100%.

But I wonder in the DPRK who is paranoid of whom? Them of the World, the US, ROK, all of those? Or is the DPRK Military paranoid that Duk Soup Bang will 'remove' them violently and is he paranoid of his Military for the same reason?

Most probably a combination of all listed.

Mel Brooks could write one hell of a comedy if it weren't so tragic(possibly a Greek tragedy?).

No, Gary, it is you that fails to understand the situation. First of all, you have frequently posted here 'Korea for the Koreans'. That phrase ceased to apply back in 1950. And with all of Kim's threats of late, it is totally without relevance today.

Iraq is totally without relevance. They didn't 'give up their weapons'.

If you are such a fanboi of Kim, why don't you move there. Wouldn't be that much different for you, after all... Living in the People's Republic of California.

Major, you really are in denial. Suddenly now that Rump is in office shrub found tons of WMD in Iraq -- according to Major.

Get based in reality. The USA called Saddam and Kim "the axis of evil." The USA made Saddam give up his WMD and rewarded him by invading and putting him on the end of a rope. This is what the rest of the world sees. Kim absolutely sees himself swinging from a rope if he stops building nukes! shrub has consequences!

Korea is for Koreans. It isn't for Major to impose his version of morals upon using nuclear war. It isn't for the USA, Russia or China either.

Major, stop being a proselytizing bully. Didn't your god order you not to judge?! Obey him. Korea is for Koreans.

"Kinda". Yeah. Right. It was forced on them by well off people that were unhappy they weren't the most well off.
Anywho, so glad you narrowed it down to the one and ONLY reason for each.

And the third wind chime is heard.....(__?__).....of course there were additional reasons, but if I listed all you'd have nothing to carp about....

Where is that statement coming from. I really doubt that by any reasonable definition that NK has a thriving economy.
