I think he is doing this because he knows he can, for the most part right now, get away with it. There are no easy or viable solutions right now, and the possibility of it getting completely out of control is too high to deal with forcefully.

In my opinion this is the defining situation of Donald Trump's presidency: if he can deal with and remove this threat successfully without either loss of (non-North Korean military or leadership) human life or submitting, then anything else he has done or not done will fade into trivial secondary importance. This is re-election material. And if not, well... I don't want to think about that too much.

If PRC runs south, Russia will run south too and suddenly China has a two front war. They aren't dumb and realize this, so they aren't going south.

Kim's military has orders to send everything towards Seoul and Tokyo before they even figure out who is shooting at them. Millions die from the conventional weapons they will fire. That is assuming he doesn't get a bunch of nukes in the air before the launchers get taken out. I damn well don't want to depend on the low bid built THADD system, it can't hit squat and all their bases are in artillery range.

Happily you included the "True or not..." Yes, this certainly is what North Korean schoolchildren are taught almost from birth, but I don't know of any evidence for it. Yes, the U.S. military had to shoot civilians who approached them due to some being used as suicide bombers by North Korea. Yes, there were massacres of civilians for their supposed political alignment, but they were perpetrated by the South Koreans, not the U.S. North Korea committed war crimes of its own, for example in the treatment of U.S. P.OW.s.

Korea was part of the Japanese empire which dissolved at the end of WWII. It was divided very amicably by the U.S. and Soviet Union into North and South Korea along the 38th parallel. The North Korean leadership then started the Korean War by invading South Korea... there is no controversy over who was the aggressor here... and even with the backing of China and the U.S.S.R. still lost because of U.S. assistance to South Korea. Thus for over sixty years as noted their leadership has seethed with hatred towards the U.S. for denying them control of the South.

So given that it's pretty cut-and-dried that they are and have always been the aggressor and instigator of war against their neighbour, for what possible reason do they deserve it?
