I have several WU completed, but their status is pending/waiting for validation Does that mean the validation process is waiting for the other system to complete the number/data crunching before the packet is credited to my account?

Yes. Each work unit is sent out, initially, to two people as two "tasks", and only when both have return the results of their processing of the data do the servers attempt validation. If validation fails then another copy is sent out to a third, and so on until the limit is reached. In the worst case this can take several months, but don't worry, if your computers are doing their jobs properly you will get the credit you deserve.
