I have two, almost identical boxes. Same OS and kernel on each. The 970s have always worked, and I typically leave the NAS alone.

This box, at some point in the past, figured out I had a pair of GTX 1080s installed. For the life of me, I can't seem to remember what I did... Any advice for why my new machine went back to not detecting GPUs? I get the error code 512.

Reading through https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=10873#68171 error 512 is caused by a missing data directory.
Make sure you installed BOINC correctly and that you have the Nvidia GPU drivers installed.

Tried without passing the --dir option so it would use the home directory. It has the proper permissions but still errors out with code 512.
