I guess that they are involved in studying the Antarctic ocean or else they would have their station over the solid part of the continent.

William, most of the continent is covered by a very viscous fluid, it is called ice. Actually it is a plastic which if I recall correctly is a very viscous fluid.

From what I read it is only a temporary measure until the stability of the ice shelf is restored.

Encounters at the End of the World is a good Werner Herzog documentary about one of the science stations at Antarctica.

The other thing is, for the next six months it will be pretty dark down there, and with that crack growing at the rate it has been you want all the visibility of it you can get.
