Need some help

I run SETI and Einstein

Lately BOINC seems to run Einstein all the time and SETI is not run regularly at all.

There used to be a way to set the preferences that allowed one to select the percentage of processing per project ie Einstein 50% SETI 50%..
No sure what happened but I cant find that anymore. Perhaps Im getting old but I thought the preferences balanced project useage out unless you set on or the other as heavier weighted.

I know I sound stupid but help would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you click on your account here in Seti, and click on Seti@home preferences, right at the top is Resource share.
Click on Edit Preferences to change that value, then save the changes.

The next time the Manager updates for Seti@home it will then download those changed settings.

Yeah, but the time estimates are so borek that the resource share is a joke.

My WUs estimated completion times are within a few minutes of actual times for CPU WUs and generally within 30sec or less for my GPU WUs.

One thing to remember is that that outcome of the share is a "work done" share, and if BOINC decides that one project has fallen behind in its long term "work done" share then that project will get preferential treatment. The calculation is certainly "quirky", and so tends to be less than reliable (haven't you seen that before?), and sometimes a project will dominate for a considerable length of time (days or even weeks) and then the panic button will be hit and the other project will be in favour for some time.

Hello all!

I am on Windows 10/64 and with a CUDA capable GPU. I have noticed that Astropulse packages default to processing with the astropulse 7.03 sse2 application. Why not the CUDA one?
I am guessing it is probably my configuration - what do I need to do?

Best regards

There is on CUDA Astropulse app, there is only an OpenCL app and seeing as you're using a Microsoft driver you can't support that app or the MB SoG app.

Get your video drivers from Nvidia directly as they supply the OpenCL component that Microsoft doesn't.

Cheers.

Thank you!

Edit: Oh wait, I do get my video drivers directly from Nvidia. I will have a look. Maybe a clean install - long time since I did that.

Microsoft is quite capable of over-writing pre-existing drivers during an update.

At least now your rig is showing the OpenCL driver component which it wasn't when I posted before.

If that part disappears it means that M$ has overwritten your driver. ;-)

Cheers.

. . For what it is worth I just underwent an M$ update, but this time it was actually polite and I got to choose when it happened. And even better news, although it did update the video drivers it didn't replace them with non-OpenCL compliant ones.

Ditto, it did distribute an OpenCL version.
However, in my case it also did downgrade the driver version from 388.31 to 382.33.
Not good, as I can't think of a single reason a distribution should ever effect a downgrade, and their logic should include a version check to prevent this.

I remember when ReuiKe was testing command lines on his cards, his run times were similar to my 'sauced' 1060 or 980. Not great for what those cards should do. I'm not sure what app he was using either.

EDIT: So that would probably be in the 'stock' 1070/980Ti range.

The Lunatics app you used is SoG the stock app is non SoG.
That might give you the trouble.

. . Agreed ... that is ridiculous behaviour. A version check to prevent that should be essential to such a process. I was so relieved that I didn't have to re-install the drivers I did not think to check the version ... Silly me.

In short, https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=6388966004 and possibly other tasks hard-lock my machine.

Yes, a hard-lock is not your fault, but in my game dev experience often when a player's machine locks up or blue screens it's a sign that we're abusing the driver in a way that it can't handle and we usually make an effort to play nicer. I hope you have a similarly positive attitude.

I would also offer the same infuriating anecdotal evidence our players give me: I can do other heavy-lifting with the card for hours and it doesn't lock up.

Full disclosure: this is a 1080 Ti running in an eGPU enclosure over Thunderbolt 3 (Razer Core v2). It crunched for a few days just fine but cannot get past this one task. It does no CPU tasks and does not crunch while I'm using the machine -- I'd hope that the risk of other things using the CPU causing timing issues would be minimal. I've whittled it down from 2 tasks at once to 1 task with a reduced cmdline: <cmdline>-use_sleep -tt 10</cmdline>. I have currently paused BOINC on this machine so that the task doesn't expire.

There's nothing in the event log that has a clue. I'm on the latest NVidia drivers. This machine is pretty new -- only a few weeks old now -- and has crunched about 34K credit so far -- maybe 24 hours of crunching distributed over the last week or so.

If there's any diagnostics you'd like me to run just let me know how I can be of assistance. I have VS2015 but no OpenCL libraries or anything -- I'm not sure if there's a debug shim like there is for DirectX that I can run with but if you give me directions I'm happy to try.
