Message 1838395 - Posted: 29 Dec 2016, 2:50:54 UTC

FYI; I hope this information helps. No complaints here.

S@H has been sending me v8.19 for several months. And always for applications ati and ati5. (I have a rather inexpensive computer, so apparently the project is better off not sending me the applications that demand the more expensive capabilities.)

Today, I received my first task for application v8 8.22 (opencl_ati5_SoG_cat132), with associated file mb_cmdline-8.22_windows_intel__opencl_nvidia_SoG.txt. The nvidia part of that file title seems unusual; my GPU is ATI.

The task isn't running.

File slots\1\stderr.txt has many repetitions of
Running on device number: 0
Priority of worker thread raised successfully
Priority of process adjusted successfully, below normal priority class used
OpenCL platform detected: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
BOINC assigns device 0
Info: BOINC provided OpenCL device ID used
ERROR: OpenCL kernel/call 'Quering NV device abilities' call failed (-30) in file ..\..\..\src\GPU_lock.cpp near line 417.
Waiting 30 sec before restart...

In BOINC Manager, the task cycles between "Waiting to run" and "Postponed".

Looking at Beta, looks like they have finished testing v8.22 and guessing by what you are reporting, they probably attempted to export it to Main.

But it appears that there are some problems. Since I don't run stock, I can't verify what they are sending.

Guess we will have to wait for others report back what they are seeing.

Message 1838601 - Posted: 29 Dec 2016, 19:49:43 UTC

Another typo in another manually edited script copied the wrong base app_version into the ati5_SoG app_versions. I've rereleased them at 8.23 and cancelled the results for the bad app_versions (8.22 opencl_ati5_SoG_nocal and opencl_ati5_SoG_cat132).

Let me know if they don't automatically get aborted by your machine the next time you connect.

I lack lots of context, so I hope I'm providing you the information you seek.

As to the manually edited script and process: Oh! So you folks are human, despite the high visibility of the tasks you work. How refreshing! And ... sounds like some of the IT environments I've worked in! No problem.

As to the nvidia task I received: I decided it was on a slow road to nowhere; I put it out of its misery.

Since sending the nvidia task away, my computer downloaded and completed an 8.22 ati task. Roughly one hour ago, it downloaded an 8.22 ati5 task and is now 24% into it.

As to automatic aborting: During the writing of this note, I clicked "Update" at BOINC Manager >> Projects >> S@H. No abort. (And ... I'll guess that's okay!)

Thanks to all the folks who contribute to BOINC and client projects. This is a great outreach of science into the community. And may we also accomplish something. Even if not, you folks are great.

Is it just me or is 8.22 slower than 8.19 on nvidia?

Not based on the testing results for those app revisions over at Beta. What is your sample population for your comparison? Likely just up to the differences in angle range or something.

As Keith asked- based on what?

I ran 8.22/23 on Beta & it was pretty much the same speed for the same type of WU as 8.19 was. Here on main the difference in run times are solely due to the different WUs. Some run longer, some run shorter. The present Guppie HIP WUs are running as long as 9min for me (although most are 7-8min or so). The previous MESSIERs were around 6min. Arecibo WUs are 2.5-5min.

EDIT- just had a HIP that took 9.5min

Ok I think I found it. Would I be correct in saying when 8.22 came out it made a new command line file?

If you used mb_cmdline* file then yes, you need to transfer old settings to new file.
That's why using app_config.xml more preferable on BOINC versions that support such file. App has few features that were developed before BOINC devs even start to think about including them into BOINC, but now, after passed years, BOINC has some needed functionality. Not all (does any way exist to provide separate cmd lines for separate devices w/o using app-specifig configuration file?) but some. And in such cases better to use BOINC's.

Yep.
probably something along the lines of

Message 1844216 - Posted: 24 Jan 2017, 12:46:08 UTC - in response to Message 1838601.

I received 40 tasks (8.22 opencl_ati5_SoG_nocal) at January 21.

The tasks don't get aborted automatically, I had to abort it manually today when I found out this.

Ah, you don't want to abort them now- this thread was about a problem back in December.
As far as I know, the issue has been fixed and they will run properly now.

I downloaded some tasks one minute ago (8.22 opencl_ati5_nocal) and the first task is running fine.
Also I wish the all another WUs will works fine.
Thanks for response, cheers!
