Hello,

I'm getting back into boinc projects after a six or seven year hiatus.

I have a few GPUs about and I am not sure which one will contribute the most to SETI. I'm trying to decide between at Nvidia Tessa M2050 and a Nvidia GeForce GTX480. Both would run on Linux and have some old Intel Core 2 Duos running them. I have limited boxes so I can't run both.

I do have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 as well. I'm probably going to use this with Asteroids@home.

My main cruncher with a GTX1060 is working on SETI right now since GPUgrid isn't distributing WUs.

What are your thoughts?

Very soon there will be a New Linux nVidia App that requires a GPU with at least Compute Capability 3.2. The 780 & 1060 are the only GPUs that meet that requirement, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CUDA#GPUs_supported So, I'd use those GPUs for SETI. The App should work fine with Ubuntu 14.04.5 and nVidia driver 367.x. I prefer Ubuntu 14.04.5 myself as it's the last LTS version that still works with the Berkeley version of BOINC that works in the Home folder.

Thanks! That is really helpful and good to know.

I'll try to snag another 780 so I can have a dedicated machine for both SETI and Asteroids.

TBar - you say your latest build will require a Compute Ability of at least 3.2. This opens up a whole, magnificent list of GPUs, including the GTX750 & GTX750ti which have a Compute Ability of 5.0, GTX980 & GTX980ti which have Compute Ability of 5.2, all the 10x0 family etc. Will these run with your new Linux app?

Yes, the App should run on the same GPUs that are currently running the Petri 'Special' App and all others with CC 3.2 and above. That includes some low end 700 GPUs that AFAIK have never tried the 'Special' App. It will be interesting to see how it runs on the Low End GPUs. It runs fine on my 750Ti & 950 cards. As an added Bonus the CUDA 6.0 Libraries are already at Beta and Main and can be downloaded from there as soon as someone figures out the download links. I'm just waiting for the source code to be posted in the repository before posting the App.

and updated over the same alpha subfolder svn location, for easy comparison to the prior sources. I have a list of issues that need addressing for the Windows build at least. Which ones may or may not be applicable on Linux/Mac I'm unclear about at this point. My extra Mac Pro PCIe cable has arrived. will likely be seeing if I can wedge in the 1050ti at some stage (presuming the web drivers will work, el capitan for now). Waiting on some SSD caddies, then it'll get Ubuntu and Win10.

OK, it's posted here; Linux CUDA 6 Special App
It's working on Day 6 - 24/7 on my Ubuntu machine without any problems.
We'll see how it goes.
