I just did a quick search for the fonts listed
Lato is not too bad, but Helvetica Neue is the one with the nearly closed "c" (and "C"), but its not the one I'm seeing, Arial (my normal font) is fairly bland, and doesn't have the closed "c" deformation. Helvetica itself has a very open "c".

Thanks for mentioning that. I hadn't thought of that in a long time. Now I can see that the "anchor" color, which I can't identify at all in the evening under artificial lighting conditions, and can barely distinguish during the day with natural lighting, is "lemonchiffon". That's supposedly one of the "fixes to dark-backround [sic] themes to increase legibility". Yeah, right!

I don't think there's any amount of lipstick that's going to make this pig sufficiently attractive for my sensibilities, so I guess I'll just wait until the dust settles and try out that Color-that-Site add-on that others have mentioned. How I'll actually know when the dust has truly settled, though, is another mystery altogether.

I haven't seen it myself. Could you link a specific post where you see it wrapping badly, and give an estimate of how wide your browser window is, please? (mine is "about 80% of a 1920 pixel monitor", for example)

I've seen it myself on pages where there's a [pre} or [code] block with one or more very long lines. Those blocks used to have internal horizontal scroll bars in situations where lines exceeded page width. Now, the boxes just stretch the page and the text-wrapping margin goes out to the right with them.

Take a look at Message 1832434 and see what happens to other text on the page.

EDIT: BTW, my browser window is normally about 1200 px wide.

I only run 25 posts per page, so it doesn't often clash - but Shaggie's message 1832466 is close enough to show the effect at the moment.

This post "pops off the side, and doesn't have the horizontal scroll bar of old. Most of the other posts on page fall off the end of the window.

I'm currently using about 2/3 of a 1980x1080 screen, but it was still a problem at ~80% of the same monitor. And it is even worse at work, where the screen is only 1360(?) wide.

Further to my readability problems - I use Firefox, both at home and work.
At home readability was poor, but at work it was OK-to-good so I had a prod around the many options, and found one that I hadn't spotted before....
Off the content - options page (http://about:preferences#content) is an "advanced" sub-page to select the fonts used, in the middle of this page is a tick box "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above" - This was unticked at work, and ticked at home, so I tried ticking it at work, and readability went downhill fast, so I reverted to unticked at work, and unticked it at home whence readability dramatically improved.
It looks as though there is a "rogue" font being used by the new page formatting scripts. This actually ties up somewhat with what Raistmer & Richard have been seeing.

Thanks Rob, that fixed the malformed type font and compacted the page height.

OK, so only brief comments for this thread so far...

There has been steady incremental improvements to the style theme, so someone must be reading the comments!

The boinc forums format was a refreshing improvement over the old classic.

After a few years of the same look, change is GOOD!

Care and further tweaks are still needed to improve the contrast for readability.

Hot links are a little obscure still. I guess we have many years of expecting to see bold or underlined blue...

Can we have a user preference please to invert the foreground/background so that the main detail is black text on a lighter background?

Aside... I have used slate grey in the past to avoid glare and eye strain. However, care is needed for all the other elements for that to work well...


A good test is: Can you still easily read the site when drunk or when suffering fogged glasses?...

Whatching site from another PC: SETI main site font as weird as yesterday.
But SETI beta site font looks quite OK.
So, different fonts between almost similarly looked sites currently? I like beta one more.

My problem with the white on gray display is that 99% of the other websites I visit are black text on white. When going from SETI to those sites my eyes take a beating trying to adjust. There is a REASON the majority of sites use black on white. Not the simple vanity of being 'different', but the need to be READABLE.

I agree on your first point.....
When switching from the new Seti pages to others, it is a bit glaring. Or even when going to this posting window, which is black on white.
But, since I DO spend many an hour on the Seti pages themselves, I must confess that the current darker scheme is growing on me more and more, and since they updated the font to be more readable, I like the effect on my eyes of the darker format.

Most ppl seem to prefer dark text on bright background, nonetheless many boards I visit use the opposite scheme. I, personally, don't have a problem with either version, I even prefer the dark one at night. Still, best option would be to give the user the choice via themes.

Well, as far as the latest deck chair rearrangement goes, "sandybrown" makes the link anchors infinitely more identifiable (to me, anyway) than "lemonchiffon" ever did, given that this dark background is apparently not going to be rescinded (except, of course, when composing posts, or embedding code or preformatted text, or ???).

I still don't understand why all of this trial-and-error development didn't take place for an extended period on a test site, like S@h Beta, before a finalized, broadly acceptable version could then be rolled out to the captive audience here on Main.
