I posted this in the Macintosh Q&A section, but think it may get seen here sooner, so giving this a try. If that's a no-no, let me know and I'll delete. For more than a week, my main cruncher, a Mac Pro (that faithfully crunched away for years) won't download setiathome_8.03_x86_64_apple... nor any new wu's. When I click the 'retry now' button, it shows 'downloading' then retry in X:XX:XX (project backoff 00:00:xx). My other 'puter, a Mac Pro Laptop running 10.9.2 seems happily crunching away. Restarted the Mac Pro, 'reset' the project, everything I can think of to no avaial. Any suggestions? Will Seti V8 not run on 10.6? I have 16g RAM so memory shouldn't be an issue. Appreciate the help. |

When I click the 'retry now' button, it shows 'downloading' then retry in X:XX:XX (project backoff 00:00:xx). There have been download issues (when the servers are up) for several days now. Generally clicking on Retry every few minutes will result in them eventually downloading. Grant Darwin NT |

Looking at the machine, it appears you collected about 100 ghosts when you reset the project. The Error listed just before the problem, SETI@home error -1 Can't create file -- disk full?, indicates there could be a problem in the Slots folder. The Slots folder is Not cleared with a reset, it takes a detachment to clear that. You might try manually removing all the folders from the Slots folder before trying anything else. Go to /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/slots and delete all the folders there named 0,1,2,3,4...etc. You might try updating your version of BOINC also, the newer one that works well with that OS can be found here, http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=8378&postid=51551#51551 See how that works. If it were me, I'd use the Optimized CPU App on that machine, it would probably be close to twice as fast as the stock CPU App on that machine. It could be a problem with the existing copy of setiathome_8.03_x86_64_apple... That file is located in /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu. It might help if you deleted the existing copy of setiathome_8.03_x86_64_apple... as well. But, that file should have been removed with the Project reset... |

Thanks TBar. I didn't have any folders in my 'slots' file. But I did download the latest version of BOINC manager, and that did the trick. Crunching away at this moment. I'll snoop around, but maybe you can point me to it...where do I find the 'optimized' CPU App? Appreciate the help. |

I was just about to mention how you might need to change the CPU version number on the Optimized CPU app_info.xml file. Too late I suppose, it appears you have found the App and have it installed. It looks as though the current Stock CPU App uses <version_num>803</version_num>. If you decide to change your other machine over it would be best to either run down the existing tasks or change the app_info.xml file <version_num> to match your existing 803 tasks. If the Stock CPU App is also using a <plan_class>xxx</plan_class> you'll also need to add that to the app_info.xml. Seems the newer BOINC has found the GPU as well. That x20 NV series is slower than your CPUs, so, I wouldn't bother trying to use it. The other machine with the 6750 might be worth trying to use the GPU, but, it's still pretty slow and might cause problems while using the machine. The new package labeled ATI5_r3552&CPUr3344.zip works well on the same 6750 machines at Beta. Or you could just use the AVX CPU App on that i7-2820QM CPU machine. The AVX App should be a bit faster on the CPUs that have AVX. |
