I think Trump underestimated the amount of establishment inertia along with left resistance to change. And every perceived wrong done from either side of the aisle results in greater division.

An old saying in the south.....'When you're up to your ass in Alligators it's hard to remember you came to drain the swamp'. A dinosaur's brain is so small you can't kill it with a head shot, you have to burn it down......... and that burning down is apparently where we are headed.

As long as the USA's political process is held hostage by the Democrats AND the Republicans, (at least in MY opinion, as well as that of a number of others) total gridlock is the best possible outcome. With total gridlock, at least the D's and R's can't screw thing up any further.

"individual freedom vs the media"

I would say that it is 'individual freedom vs. the authoritarian establishment (of which, of course, the media is a part)'.

The media (the Press) has gone from the protector of the rights of The People (like it should be) against the authoritarian elites, to being PART OF the authoritarian elites.
